Tax season can lead to increased mail theft: El Dorado County Sheriff’s Office

(FOX40.COM) — With tax season around the corner, the El Dorado County Sheriff’s Office is keeping an extra set of eyes peeled for any would-be mail thieves, according to a recent social media post from the sheriff’s office.

Extra patrols will be conducted across different areas of El Dorado County as historical trends show a rise in mail theft between January and April as residents get their tax filing information mailed in.

The sheriff’s office is sharing a number of tips to help residents reduce their chances of falling victim to mail thieves:

• Make sure to check your mail daily
• Sign up for informed delivery with the USPS Informed Delivery – Mail and Package Notifications
• Keep track of any changes in your credit history
• Report any suspicious activity to the sheriff’s office
• Be sure to always remove personal items from your vehicle

The sheriff’s office also advises that residents be warry of phone scams where false IRS employees will attempt to collect owed taxes with prepaid gift cards over the phone.
