Runoff election results Tuesday evening took a backseat to the school shooting in Uvalde, but Republicans and Democrats chose candidates involved in runoffs for the November general election.

For Republicans, incumbent attorney general Ken Paxton took a roughly 2-to-1 win over Land Commissioner George P. Bush.

In Taylor County, Paxton won 70.3% of the vote, unofficially.

To succeed Bush as commissioner of the general land office, former District 24 state senator Dawn Buckingham also took a 2-to-1 win statewide over Tim Westley.

Locally, Buckingham won 81.2% of the vote.

Taylor County also supported incumbent Wayne Christian for the Railroad Commission over Sarah Stogner. He won 78% of the vote here and 65% statewide.

For Democrats, voters chose Mike Collier as their candidate for lieutenant governor to oppose Republican incumbent Dan Patrick. He took 54.8% of the statewide vote and 59.7% in Taylor County.

For AG, Rochelle Mercedes Garza earned 62.7% of the statewide vote, and 63.4% of the local vote. She will face Paxton.

Buckingham will face Jay Kieberg for land commissioner. Kieberg won 52.9% of Democrats' vote statewide and 55.1% in Taylor County.

There were no contested local races, though Republicans voted for precinct chairpersons.

For Precinct 204, Doug Offermann and Abilene ISD board member Derek Hood tied with 45 votes each.

Abilene City Council member Kyle McAlister, who this month won re-election, made it 2-for-2 with his election to Precinct 402 chairman over Marcus Anderson, 148-53.

However, May council candidate Charles Byrn took his second loss, losing to Fred Johnson 61-55 for Precinct 401 leadership.

Other winners were: Dennis Regan (Precinct 205), Dale Boecker (Precinct 304) and Carmen Chandler (Precinct 307).
