“Yellowstone” fans will have to wait another year to see how the final season ends.

Deadline reported Thursday that the final episodes of “Yellowstone” season 5 will air on the Paramount Network in November 2024. The number of episodes to air is yet unknown. The back half of season 5 will end “Yellowstone” in its current iteration, but a spinoff show is already in the works from series creator Taylor Sheridan.

Paramount has given the spinoff show the working title “2024” and is rumored to star Texas actor Matthew McConaughey, according to Deadline. Other actors from the original “Yellowstone” series are expected to appear in the spinoff as well.

But that’s not all. Paramount also announced that another “Yellowstone” prequel is in the works that will follow the Dutton family in the year 1944.

The latest prequel show set in the “Yellowstone” universe will be called “1944,” and comes after “1883” premiered in 2021 and “1923” in 2022. Each of the prequel shows have been about the Dutton family’s struggle to survive in each of the year’s presented.

A release date and possible cast list for “1944” have yet to be announced. However, considering the history of the year-specific prequel shows, its a safe bet that some iteration of the Dutton family will be onscreen.

Why is ‘Yellowstone’ coming to an end?

“Yellowstone” season 5 premiered in November 2022 and wrapped up the first half of episodes on New Years Day. Ever since then, the drama has been mainly off-screen.

Word broke in February that the back half of the latest “Yellowstone” season could be the show’s last with Costner as John Dutton. Scheduling conflicts with Costner’s multi-part western movie epic “Horizon” precluding the star from continuing his role as patriarch of the Montana ranch family.

Paramount confirmed in early May that “Yellowstone” would indeed end in its current form with the final episodes of season 5. During that announcement, the news of a sequel show, now known under the working title “2024”, was first announced.

The news of both Writer’s Guild of America and Screen Actors Guild - American Federation of Television and Radio Artists (SAG-AFTRA) strikes over the summer further slowed down work on “Yellowstone.”

A contract was reached with the Writer’s Guild in September and conversations are ongoing daily about the SAG-AFTRA strike. But since writers are back to work, it’s likely that writing on the final episodes of “Yellowstone” is underway.
