There Was a Question About Taylor Swift On the AP Government & Politics Exam

If there was a Taylor Swift Advanced Placement exam, I can guarantee you, I'd get a five out of five. Unfortunately, that's never going to happen, but AP US Government and Politics students were in for a surprise last week when they opened up their exam and found a question about the singer.
According to CNN, the first free response question on the May 3rd version of the test referenced Taylor's voter registration outreach. After staying quiet on politics for years, ahead of the 2018 midterm elections, Taylor finally decided to speak up. In an Instagram post from October 2018, Taylor shared that she would be voting in Tennessee for the election, revealing exactly who she was voting for and why. "I always have and always will cast my vote based on which candidate will protect and fight for the human rights I believe we all deserve in this country," she wrote. "I believe in the fight for LGBTQ rights, and that any form of discrimination based on sexual orientation or gender is WRONG. I believe that the systemic racism we still see in this country towards people of color is terrifying, sickening and prevalent."
In the 24 hours after Taylor shared that post on Instagram, voter registration site Vote.org reported 65,000 new registrations.
"Vote.org saw [Tennessee] registrations spike specifically since Taylor's post," Kamari Guthrie, director of communications for Vote.org told Buzzfeed at the time. "Thank God for Taylor Swift."
Jerome White, a spokesperson for the College Board, told CNN that the question about Taylor asked students to "analyze how voter registration laws and procedures can affect civic participation, such as voter turnout."
"We're delighted to hear that AP students could relate what they've learned in their AP course to what they experience in their daily lives—and in this case, what they've read on their Instagram feeds," Jerome told CNN.
Unfortunately, if you are taking the exam on May 20th or June 3rd, the question will not be included in those version. But who knows, maybe Selena Gomez or Zendaya will pop up!
