Taylor Swift had a revolutionary year in 2021. She re-recorded her old albums and released Fearless (Taylor’s Version) and Red (Taylor’s Version), earning massive acclaim for regaining artistic control over her earlier work. She broke Spotify streaming records with Red (Taylor’s Version) and is working on achieving the same level of success with re-issues of Taylor Swift, Speak Now, 1989, and eventually, Reputation. All in all, she’s not letting anyone discredit her hard work.

So when British musician Damon Albarn — best known as the frontman and lead singer of bands Blur and Gorillaz — claimed that Taylor “doesn’t write her own songs” in an interview with the Los Angeles Times, she immediately clapped back on Twitter.

“I was such a big fan of yours until I saw this. I write ALL of my own songs,” Taylor wrote in response to the Los Angeles Times tweet about Damon’s interview. “Your hot take is completely false and SO damaging. You don’t have to like my songs but it’s really f***ed up to try and discredit my writing. WOW.”

“PS I wrote this tweet all by myself in case you were wondering,” she added.

Taylor came up in the Los Angeles Times interview after Damon implied that many musicians today are “relying on sound and attitude” and not necessarily their songwriting abilities. After the interviewer referenced Taylor’s talent, Damon bluntly replied: “She doesn’t write her own songs.”

The interviewer challenged Damon, saying that Taylor “of course” writes and co-writes her music.

“That doesn’t count. I know what co-writing is. Co-writing is very different to writing. I’m not hating on anybody, I’m just saying there’s a big difference between a songwriter and a songwriter who co-writes,” he responded.

“A really interesting songwriter is Billie Eilish and her brother. I’m more attracted to that than to Taylor Swift. It’s just darker — less endlessly upbeat,” Damon continued.

After Taylor’s furious tweet, Damon quickly responded with an apology: “I totally agree with you. i had a conversation about songwriting and sadly it was reduced to clickbait. I apologise unreservedly and unconditionally. The last thing I would want to do is discredit your songwriting. I hope you understand,” he wrote.

Many of Taylor’s fans and colleagues came to her defense after Damon’s accusations, including her Folklore and Evermore co-producers, Jack Antonoff and Aaron Dessner.

“i’ve never met damon albarn and he’s never been to my studio but apparently he knows more than the rest of us about all those songs taylor writes and brings in,” Jack wrote.

“Not sure why you @Damonalbarn would try to discredit Taylor's brilliant songwriting but as someone who has gotten to press record around her ...your statements couldn't be further from the truth...you're obviously completely clueless as to her actual writing and work process,” Aaron penned.

Even the official Empire State Building account chimed in: “No one does it better than you.”

Suffice to say, Taylor’s first tweet of 2022? Iconic.
