Taylor Swift Performs at Stonewall Inn's Pride Celebration

She sang "Shake It Off" with Jesse Tyler Ferguson.

If you thought Taylor Swift was done with surprises, you obviously don’t know Taylor Swift.

Just after releasing her brand-new single “You Need to Calm Down,” the singer-songwriter surprised the crowd at the Stonewall Inn on Friday, June 14 to perform at the establishment’s celebration honoring both Pride Month and the 50th anniversary of the Stonewall Riots. As People reports, Taylor was introduced by Modern Family actor Jesse Tyler Ferguson, who was headlining the event. According to Variety, the concert also included performances from Sara Bareilles, Gavin Creel, Lea DeLaria, and Vincint.

Taylor took the stage to perform her 1989 hit “Shake It Off,” and, as photos and videos on social media soon showed, Jesse joined her for a duet rendition of the song. The Modern Family star later tweeted about the performance, writing: “I’m so happy I don’t have to keep this secret any longer. Look who came to celebrate the 50th anniversary of Stonewall at the Stonewall Inn. @taylorswift13, you are a gem. Thank you for everything you do for the LGBTQ community. We ❤️ you! 🌈.”

Variety reports that the event was co-hosted by entertainment group AEG, which donated $50,000 to the Stonewall Inn Gives Back Initiative, an organization committed to “eliminating the social intolerance that is profoundly impacting the lives of LGBTQ citizens throughout America and abroad.” The Stonewall Riots of 1969 are often considered as the catalyst for the LGBTQ rights movement, after a police raid that took place at the now-historic bar in June of that year.

Taylor’s Stonewall performance comes on the heels of several other actions in support of LGBTQ rights, including writing a letter asking her senator to support the Equality Act and calling upon her fans to do the same. Similarly, GLAAD recently reported an influx in donations (all in the amount of $13, Taylor’s favorite number) in conjunction with the release of her new song, which shouts out the organization in the lyrics.

“Taylor Swift is one of the world's biggest pop stars,” Anthony Ramos, Director of Talent Engagement at GLAAD said in a statement to E! News. “The fact that she continues to use her platform and music to support the LGBTQ community and the Equality Act is a true sign of being an ally. ‘You Need to Calm Down' is the perfect Pride anthem, and we're thrilled to see Taylor standing with the LGBTQ community to promote inclusivity, equality, and acceptance this Pride month.”
