One of Taylor Swift's best songs in years now has one of her best music videos.
Mere hours before she is set to unleash new album "Lover" into the world, Swift released a gorgeous new clip for its romantic title track, presumably inspired by her boyfriend of three years, actor Joe Alwyn.
In the video, which takes place entirely inside a snow globe at Christmastime, Swift roams around a multicolored house with her sweetheart, played by actor/singer Christian Owens, who was also a backup dancer on her Reputation stadium tour. Together, they slow-dance, play with cats and go for a swim in a giant fishbowl, with frequent cuts to Swift playing guitar in chic, retro outfits.
The concept for the "Lover" video, Swift explained to fans in a YouTube livestream prior to Thursday's premiere, was actually inspired by a lyric on "1989," her 2015 Grammy-winning foray into pop. In the song "You Are in Love," which she wrote about two smitten best friends, she sings, "You two are dancing in a snow globe, 'round and 'round."
Swift's previous videos for "Lover" singles "ME!" and "You Need to Calm Down" have been similarly bright, especially in contrast to her darker, divisive 2017 album "Reputation." The singer jokingly described that effort's aesthetic as "nighttime" and "full swamp witch," while her "Lover" album's vibe is more "daytime" and "sunlit fields."
"I just pictured (those) and wrote music from a perspective of a much more free, romantic, whimsical place," Swift teased Thursday on YouTube.
"Lover" is out Friday.
