TCC baseball sweeps South Georgia State College, wins 2nd game in bottom of seventh inning

Tallahassee Community College baseball opened its season Sunday under first-year coach Bryan Henry with a doubleheader sweep over South Georgia State College, 8-3 and 4-3, at Eagle Field.

TCC led the opener from the start and won the second game in the last inning on a hit-by-pitch with the bases loaded.

The Eagles jumped to a 5-0 advantage in the opener after three innings, punctuated by Justen Crews’ two-run double.

After the Hawks pulled within 5-3 in the top of the fourth, TCC extended its lead on an RBI double by Jesus Vanegas in the bottom of the frame and RBI single by Marco Dinges in the fifth.

TCC starter Kyle Morse tossed four innings. He allowed three earned runs on six hits.

Reliever Seth Dudley threw three scoreless innings and allowed two hits.

Crews and Vanegas each had two hits for the Eagles.

TCC won the second game in the bottom of the seventh inning when Ziggy Thomas was hit-by-a-pitch with the bases loaded.

With one out, the Eagles strung together three consecutive singles from Greg Melo, Phil Sheffield and Crews to load the bases for Thomas.

Trailing 3-2 in the sixth inning, South Georgia State College tied the game at 3-3 on back-to-back doubles with two outs.

Crews, Vanegas and Melo each had two hits for TCC.

TCC starter Gabe Phipps allowed one earned run on one hit in 3.2 innings.

Middle reliever Austin Asbill had two strikeouts and closer John Kent threw a scoreless seventh to earn the win.

TCC is at home next Saturday against Florida State College at Jacksonville at 1 p.m.
