The classes were through ALERRT, which stands for Advanced Law Enforcement Rapid Response Training.

TCSO Sheriff Sally Hernandez and Austin ISD Superintendent Matias Segura answered questions about the program, its participants and the usage agreement between AISD and TCSO.

The program was created in response to Senate Bill 1852, according to TCSO. SB 1852 requires law enforcement officers to complete at least 16 hours of training for responding to an active shooter.

For the training, officials agreed to use an empty school as the training facility.

“Rosedale School on 49th Street will once again serve as a place of learning. This time, for peace officers,” TCSO said.

According to a release, approximately 800 law enforcement officers throughout Travis County will be trained as part of the program by 2025.
