Paityn Noe sets girls' 5k record

Ballard senior Paityn Noe set a new state record in the girls' 5-kilometer run during the Bombers' opening cross country meet at the Lynx Invitational.

Noe, the defending individual state champion in Class 3A, completed the course in 17 minutes 23.60 seconds to edge out the old record of 17:23.9 set by Ames' Camille Jackson at the 2019 state meet. She outdistanced her nearest competitor at Webster City, Algona's Moriah Knapp, by nearly 2:30.

Noe's efforts helped Ballard, ranked third as a team in 3A, take first at the Lynx Invitational with 33 points. North Polk, ranked seventh in 3A, came in second with 66 points.

Ava Vance and sophomores Brynn Wilson, Ava Richardson and Annika Larson also placed in the top 10 for the Ballard girls. Vance took fifth in 20:54.81, Wilson eighth in 21.28.11, Richardson ninth in 21:28.79 and Larson 10th in 21:29.16.

The Ballard boys scored 85 points to trail only second-ranked (3A) North Polk's perfect score of 15 and 19th-ranked Algona's 81 points at Webster City.

Austin Shoen and Seth Pencook led the Bomber boys. Shoen placed 10th with a 5k time of 17:41.56 and Pencook ran a 17:56.32 to finish 12th.

Ballard volleyball team drops heartbreaker

The Ballard volleyball team dropped a heartbreak in its Raccoon River Conference match with ADM Aug. 30.

The Bombers nearly improved to 7-0 after the two teams went to a rally game.

Ballard rebounded from a 25-23 loss in the first set to take the next two by scores of 25-22 and 25-21. But ADM came back with a 25-20 victory in the fourth set to force a rally game, where a Bomber comeback attempt fell just short in a 17-15 loss.

Both teams had similar efficiency rates on their attacks with Ballard's at 35 % and ADM's 38 %. The Tigers held a 10-8 advantage in kills per set, which offset Ballard's 32 blocks, 98-90 % advantage in serving accuracy and 11-6 edge in aces.

Alliyah Thompson, Memphis Inglett and Brenna Baumgardner each had eight kills, Brooklyn Baumgardner seven and Kasey Larson six for Ballard. Brooklyn Baumgardner had nine blocks, Brenna and Thompson seven apiece and Larson six.

Payton Askelsen led Ballard in the back row with 16 digs. Riley Askelsen handed out 24 assists and added three aces, Ally Baker dished out 14 assists and Hailey Flanders came up with three aces.

The Collins-Maxwell volleyball team struggled in its loss to BCLUW. The Spartans fell by scores of 25-4, 25-8 and 25-12.

Statistics for the match were not available at press time.
