TCT sports round-up: Ballard boys golf team wins Nevada Co-ed Invitational

The Ballard boys golf team placed first and the girls third at the Nevada Co-ed Invitational April 6 at the Indian Hills Country Club in Nevada.

The Bomber boys shot a 321 over 18 holes to beat Nevada by 27 strokes for the victory among the four competing teams. The Ballard girls carded a 440 to finish behind Nevada's 382 and West Marshall's 390.

The Ballard and Collins-Maxwell boys track teams both turned in fourth-place finishes during the week. The Bombers scored 92 points at the Nevada Co-ed Invitational April 6 in Nevada and the Spartans finished with 98 points at the South Hamilton Co-ed Invitational April 6 in Jewell.

The Collins-Maxwell girls track team placed third at South Hamilton. The Spartans finished with 126.5 points.

The Ballard girls tennis team opened its season by splitting matches with Pella and North Polk. The Bombers suffered a 9-2 loss at home to Pella April 3 and they blanked North Polk, 11-0, April 6 at Alleman.

The Ballard boys tennis team suffered a 6-5 loss at home to North Polk April 6, then scored victories over Indianola (9-2) and Southeast Polk (6-5) Friday at Pleasant Hill.

The Ballard girls soccer team scored its first victory of the season April 6 with a 1-0 victory at Newton. The Bombers also suffered an 8-0 loss to Gilbert April 3 at Gilbert.

The split put the Ballard girls at 1-2 on the season.

The Ballard boys soccer team fell to 0-4 with losses to 2A No. 1 Gilbert (4-0) April 3 at Huxley and Grinnell (2-0) April 6 at Grinnell.

Here is what we learned from this week's Tri-County Times sports action.

Ballard boys golf looks impressive in win at Nevada

The Ballard boys golf team was impressive in its victory at the Nevada Co-ed Invitational.

The Bombers produced four of the top five individual scores during the 18-hole tournament to cruise to victory.

Sophomore Brenden Wright earned medalist for Ballard by shooting a 77 to win by three strokes. Brady Kruger was medalist runner-up with an 80 and Mason Gatchel tied West Marshall's Hunter Polley for third with an 81.

Lincoln Miller placed fifth with the final counted score for Ballard. He shot an 83.

Andrew Princehouse came in seventh with an 89 and Jake Oldenkamp took 12th with a 114 to round out the scoring for Ballard.

The Ballard girls had three golfers place in the top 10 individually at Nevada.

Alliyah Thompson and Aubrey Estrem led the way by tying for seventh after they each shot a 108 over 18 holes. Chastyn Gering placed 10th with an 89.

Maddie Kielsmeier completed the scoring for Ballard after tying for 13th with a score of 115. Taylor Engstler took 17th with a 121 and Claire Cleveland 18th with a 160 as the other varsity golfers to compete for the Bombers.

Ballard boys track team wins three events at Nevada

The Ballard boys track team picked up three gold medals and added one runner-up and five third-place performances at the Nevada Invitational.

Chance Lande and Jayden Swain both had a hand in two gold medals for Ballard.

Lande won the 400-meter dash in 51.15 seconds and Swain took first in the long jump with a distance of 20 feet, 2.5 inches. They both were part of the Bombers' winning sprint medley relay team, joining up with Jaden Peasley and Eli Rouse to run a 1:36.49.

Lade, Rouse, Jameson Witt and Jakson Fleischmann teamed up to take second in the 4X400 with a time of 3:33.60. The Bombers only trailed Roland-Story's time of 3:32.13.

Swain placed third in the 100 with a time of 11.96, Rouse won bronze in the 200 with a 23.65 showing and Witt took third in the open 400 after crossing the finish line in 52.68. Trent Payne joined Fleischmann, Witt and Lande in running a third-place time of 8:30.36 in the 4X800 and Jude Gibson teamed up with Swain, Rouse and Payne to earn a bronze in the distance medley with a 3:56.38 showing.

Spartan girls total 13 top-three finishes at SH Invite

The Collins-Maxwell girls track team totaled 13 top-three finishes at the South Hamilton Invitational.

The Spartans finished 20 points behind South Hamilton's winning score of 146.5 and 12.5 points behind West Marshall's runner-up showing of 139 points.

Mary Staudt won both the girls shot put and the discus with school-record throws for Collins-Maxwell.

Staudt had a toss of 35 feet, 10 inches in the shot put to beat out the 33-foot effort by South Hamilton's Kendra Hoversten for first. Staudt threw 113-10 in the discus to beat Hoversten by nearly 20 feet for the win.

Chloe Wierson and Marissa Boege both won three silver medals for Collins-Maxwell.

Wierson placed second in both the 400 hurdles and high jump with respective efforts of 1:16.47 and 4-8. West Marshall's Emelia Hauser won the 400 hurdles in 1:11.26 and the Trojans' Kylee Schuler took first in the high jump with a jump of 5-0.

Wierson also teamed with Boege, Haylee Merryman and Cypress Erickson to place second in the 4X100 relay with a time of 55.68. Boege joined up with Hannah Kimberley, Ashlynn Leslie and Opal Toornstra to earn a silver in the shuttle hurdle with time of 1:16.41 and she was second individually in the 100 hurdles after crossing the finish line in 17.90.

Erickson jumped 14-1.75 in the long jump to take second behind the 14-7.75 jump by BCLUW's Savannah Moeller.

Kimberley placed third in both the 100 and 400 hurdles with respective times of 18.78 and 1:16.72. Wierson was third in the open 400 with a time of 1:05.84, Leslie won bronze in the long jump with a jump of 13-11.25 and Merryman, Sarah Tschantz, Leslie and Erickson placed third in the 4X200 with a 2:04.12 showing.

Collins-Maxwell boys medal in six events at South Hamilton

The Collins-Maxwell boys track team won two events and added one runner-up finish and a trio of third-place performances at the South Hamilton meet.

Ethan Haus won the 3,200 in 10:32.29. He beat BCLUW's Cayden McLeland by 21.84 seconds for the victory.

Luke Huntrods took first in the boys discus. His best throw of 137-8 was 10-8 farther than the runner-up distance by South Hamilton's Carter Balvanz.

Sophomore Isaac Brown was second in the 100 for the Spartans with a time of 12.23. BCLUW's Tyler Bracy won in 12.23.

Josef Dvorak took third in the open 400 with a 54.45 showing and Haus won bronze in the 1,600 after running a 4:58.59. The Spartans also placed third in the sprint medley relay with a time of 1:43.08.

Ballard tennis teams rebound from opening losses

The Ballard boys tennis team came back from its loss to North Polk with two impressive performances.

In the loss to North Polk Jace Krogh and Rylan Culp won the Nos. 4 and 5 singles matches. Krogh defeated North Polk's Derrick Rhoads in straight sets, 6-2 and 6-2, and Culp rallied from a 6-2 loss in the first set against Vance Rupp to win the next two, 7-6 and 1-0.

In doubles play Krogh and Culp defeated Rhoads and Elijah Dickerson in the No. 3 match, 6-2 and 6-4 and Jaron Watson and Jameson Berka won the No. 4 match over Jack Vande Krol and Noah Lindell, 6-2 and 7-6. Beau Warg and Drew Pingel won the No. 5 match over North Polk's Levi Forde and Landon Leonard, 7-5 and 6-1.

Ballard picked up four singles victories and swept doubles play against Indianola.

Caden Miller scored an 8-2 win over Indianola's Joe Comer in the No. 1 match, Dawson Brekke and Jaron Watson each delivered 9-7 victories over the Indians' Michael Rothchild and Erik Jensen in the Nos. 2 and 3 matches respectively and Isaiah Zeigler pulled off an 8-3 win over Justus Woell in the No. 6 match. In doubles play Miller and Emmett Miller won the No. 1 match by an 8-1 margin, Brekke and Ian Godbold took the No. 2 match by the same score, Culp and Krogh pulled off an 8-0 shutout in the third match, Warg and Pingel did the same in the No. 4 match and Zeigler and Rex Olsan scored an 8-2 triumph in the No. 5 match.

Ballard picked up four singles wins and held on in its triumph over Southeast Polk.

Caden Miller beat Southeast Polk's Kaden Townsend by an 8-4 score in the No. 1 match, Emmett Miller took the No. 3 match over Zach Funk by the same score, Krogh toppled Devin Dodson by an 8-5 decision in the No. 4 match and Watson edged the Rams' Tyler Ciesielski in the No. 6 match, 9-8 (7-1). Ballard's only doubles wins came in the Nos. 1 and 5 matches as the Miller boys beat Funk and Manning by an 8-1 margin in the No. 1 match and Warg and Pingel took the No. 5 match over Southeast Polk's Wyatt Pastour and Eli Shipley, 8-2.

The Ballard girls won one match apiece during their loss to Pella. Kaitlyn Zugay took the No. 1 match over Pella's Emily Blom in a 10-6 battle and Memphis Inglett and Adi Zigler teamed to take down the Little Dutch's Sydney Namminga and Kytilin Plate in the No. 5 doubles match, 10-3.

The Bomber girls won every set against North Polk.

Zugay defeated North Polk's Abby Mangae by a 10-4 score in the No. 1 match, Kiley Calvert took the No. 2 match over Harika Cakinberk by a 10-5 margin and Graice Ross also won by a 10-5 score over Sophie Labb in the No. 3 match. Vanessa Nop scored a 10-4 score over Greta Dillinger in the No. 4 match, Ellie Volkmann won the No. 5 match over Abby Vorsten in a 10-0 shutout and Jocie Hobbs took the No. 6 match with a 10-2 triumph over the Comets' Savannah Stevenson.

Delaney Halverson helps Ballard get past Newton in girls soccer

The Ballard girls soccer team stepped up defensively and received a clutch goal from Delaney Halverson to get past Newton for its first victory.

The Bomber defense rose to the occasion to keep the Cardinals off the scoreboard during regulation. The offense struggled to get much going, but Halverson delivered big time in the second half when she converted a penalty kick for the only goal of the game to give Ballard the win.

The Bombers opened the week with the loss to a powerhouse Gilbert squad. Ballard keeper Maddie Catron made 11 saves and Kora Johnson added two and Amelia Faubus and Megan Rowedder each had one shot on goal on offense.

The Ballard boys soccer team hung tough in two shutout losses.

The Bomber boys saw keeper Parker Becker make an incredible 23 saves against No. 1 Gilbert. Ballard got off just six shots on offense, with Brady Jimenez and Caleb Lehmkuhl each recording one shot on goal.

In the loss to Grinnell the Bomber boys gave up both goals in the first half. Becker made 10 saves, Logan Huntrods made two shots on goal and Jimenez, Lehmkuhl, Liam Hurst, Joe Seigfried and Jack Nelson each added one shot on goal apiece.
