TCT sports round-up: Ballard boys get big RRC win over Carroll

The Ballard boys basketball team swept Carlisle and Carroll, the Bomber girls suffered their first loss, the Ballard wrestling team went 4-1 at the Al Garrison Duals and the Bomber girls wrestling team took fifth at the Pride of Iowa Tournament last week.

The Bomber boys went to Carlisle and handed the Wildcats a 55-39 setback Dec. 13 and they pulled away from Carroll for a 74-63 victory Friday in Huxley. The two wins put Ballard at 4-1, both overall and in the Raccoon River Conference.

The Ballard, girls, ranked fourth in Class 4A, suffered their first defeat at Carlisle by a 57-48 score. The Bombers came back to down Carroll, 59-40, to push their record to 6-1 overall and 4-1 in the RRC.

The Bomber wrestling team moved its dual record to 5-4 following the Al Garrison Duals at Waukee Saturday. Ballard defeated Ames (54-27), Urbandale (37-35), Perry (54-15) and Waukee (40-35) and fell to Waukee Northwest (36-33).

The Ballard girls wrestling team scored 83 points to edge Panorama for fifth out of 13 teams at the Pride of Iowa Tournament Saturday at Liberty. S.W.A.T Valkyrie won the tournament with 133.5 points.

The Collins-Maxwell basketball teams competed in doubleheaders against North Tama and GMG last week.

The Spartan girls swept both games, defeating North Tama by a 51-21 score in Maxwell Dec. 13 and edging GMG in 47-42 battle at Garwin Friday. They improved to 6-2 overall and 3-1 in the Iowa Star Conference South Division.

The Collins-Maxwell boys pulled off a 51-47 victory over North Tama and dropped a 72-71 heartbreaker to GMG. The split put the Spartans at 3-2 in the ISC South and 3-4 overall.

The Collins-Maxwell wrestling team went 0-5 at the Lynnville-Sully Duals Saturday in Sully. The Spartans fell to Baxter (60-12), Cardinal (30-24), Colfax-Mingo (54-18), Lynnville-Sully (39-18) and Moravia (48-18) during their first dual competition of the season.

Here is what we learned from last week's area sports competition.

Ballard boys look impressive against Carroll

Ballard and Carroll both went into Friday's boys basketball match-up with one loss on the season.

The Bombers jumped out to a 28-18 lead and withstood a 14-3 Carroll run to take a 41-32 lead at the half. The Tigers pulled within three on multiple occasions in the second half, but they couldn't get any close as Ballard ended the game on a 16-8 run.

Ballard was hot offensively in the win.

The Bombers shot 57.8% from the field and made 12 of 20 3-pointers. They also had 22 assists against just 12 turnovers.

Mason Gorsh went for 25 points, eight rebounds, five assists and four steals and Jude Gibson 24 points, four assists and three rebounds against the Tigers. Gorsh was an impressive 6 of 8 from 3-point range.

Austin Shoen was a perfect 4 of 4 from the field and scored 10 points and Nolan Cogdill chipped in 9 points and four rebounds for the Bombers.

In the win over Carlisle the Bombers led by six at the half and pulled away with a 29-19 run in the second half. They posted a 37-30 rebounding advantage and held the Wildcats to 31.2% shooting from the field.

Gibson turned in a tremendous all-around game against Carlisle with 14 points, 10 rebounds, seven assists and five steals. Miles Mudd added 13 points and five rebounds, Gorsh 9 points and five boards and Cogdill 8 points and six rebounds.

Bomber girls suffer first setback

The Ballard girls tasted defeat for the first time with its loss to Carlisle.

The wheels came off for the Bombers in the second half against the Wildcats. Ballard led 27-20 at the half, but Carlisle outscored the Bombers 37-21 over the final two quarters.

Ballard struggled to keep Carlisle's offense in check during the loss. The Wildcats shot 52.5% from the field compared to the Bombers' 34% shooting effort.

Alliyah Thompson had 20 points, 10 rebounds and two blocks for Ballard in the loss. Lily Hillebrand added 12 points and three assists, Paige Noe 11 points and two assists, Raegan Loewe 3 points, Lily Beall 2 points, six rebounds and two steals and Alise Van Pelt six assists.

In the win over Carroll the Bomber girls forced 25 turnovers and made 9 of 21 3-pointers. Ballard ended the game on a 26-7 run after the Tigers tied the score at 33-33 late in the third quarter.

Thompson went for 23 points, 12 rebounds and seven steals against Carroll. Noe had 11 points, five assists and three steals, Kiley Calvert made three 3-pointers and tallied 9 points and Hillebrand totaled 6 points and assists apiece.

Ballard wrestlers look impressive at Garrison Duals

The Ballard wrestling team had a strong showing with its four victories at the Garrison Duals.

Brody Sampson and Gabe Christensen were both 5-0 and Henry Christensen finished 4-0 on the day for the Bombers.

Sampson pinned Ames' Jiraiya Fonseca in one minute, 48 seconds, Urbandale's Cain Tigges in 2:51 and Waukee Northwest's Brayden Williams in 1:32 at 182 pounds. He also earned a 12-2 major decision over Waukee's Blake Hauck and a 6-2 victory over Perry's Kain Killmer.

Gabe Christensen earned falls over Urbandale's Jaxson Maass in 50 seconds, Waukee Northwest's Abe Parker in 2:33 and Waukee's Beckett Bakker in 1:24 at 195. He also scored an 11-6 decision over Perry's Keegan Snyder and received a forfeit against Ames.

Henry Christensen edged Waukee Northwest's Henry Kennedy in a 4-1 battle and he pinned Perry's Kevin Colin in 4:14 and Waukee's Andrew Hine in 1:37 at 220. He received a forfeit against Urbandale and did not compete against Ames.

Tony Horness (113), Wyatt Emery (120), Jacob Harrison (132), Lane Kahler (145), Daniel Hyman (152) and Rhett Hedrick (160) each won by fall for Ballard against Ames. Tucker Vitzthum (138) and Hyman picked up a fall against Urbandale and Horness won by major decision and Kahler via decision.

In the loss to Waukee Northwest Hedrick and Horness each won by decision and Harrison and Jackson Wacha (170) each picked up a fall. Kahler, Hyman, Wacha and Alaric Whiteing (285) each scored a fall and Hedrick, Harrison and Vitzthum (132) each received a forfeit in the win over Perry.

Kahler, Hedrick, Wacha and Harrison all won by fall against Waukee. Waukee was deducted a point in the dual for unsportsmanlike conduct.

Noelle Boettger takes first for Bomber girls at Pride of Iowa

Noelle Boettger picked up an individual championship at 130 for the Ballard girls wrestling team at the Pride of Iowa Tournament.

Boettger went 3-0 during the tournament. She pinned Martensdale St. Marys' Zoey Donehoo in 21 seconds and Panorama's Emma Stovall in just nine seconds to reach the finals.

In the championship round Boettger pinned Creston's Grace Keeler in 1:42.

Allison Baker and Alya Ott both took second for Ballard.

Baker lost by tech fall to S.W.A.T Valkyerie's Adyson Lundquist (16-1), but bounced back to score falls over Moravia's Layla Ewing in 25 seconds and Panorama's Elizabeth Handy in 28 seconds at 120. Ott pinned Panorama's Layla Greene in 1:20 and S.W.A.T Valkyerie's Lilliana Tafoya 34 seconds before losing to Southern Tier's Anna Greenland in 1:28 at 145.

Liberty Boettger (135) and Caleigh Rhiner (140) both placed third for the Bombers.

Liberty was 1-2 with a pin and Rhiner 2-1 with two wins by fall.

Chloe Wierson, Erica Houge power Collins-Maxwell girls to two wins

Chloe Wierson had a huge game for the Collins-Maxwell girls basketball team during its victory over North Tama.

Wierson went for 23 points, 10 rebounds and seven steals. She made 11 of 19 field goals on the night.

Erica Houge added 17 points, nine rebounds, four assists and three steals. Marissa Boege chipped in 6 points, four assists and three rebounds and Vivian Kahler tacked on five points and four rebounds off the bench.

In the win over GMG the Spartans took advantage of 12 offensive rebounds and nine steals. Houge went off against the Wolverines, finishing with 24 points, 10 rebounds, six assists, four steals and one block.

Wierson added 9 points and 11 rebounds and Boege put up 9 points, five rebounds and three assists. May Staudt chipped in 3 points and seven rebounds and Sarah Tschantz scored two points.

Luke Huntrods lifts Spartan boys past North Tama

Luke Huntrods turned in a big game to help the Collins-Maxwell boys get past North Tama.

Huntrods scored a team-high 20 points after making 7 of 21 shots. He added six rebounds, two steals and one block.

Josef Dvorak added 9 points, 12 rebounds and four assists. Ethan Haus had 7 points, two steals and a block, Jace Huntrods 5 points and three steals and Dane Beattie and Cooper Wierson 4 points apiece.

Statistics for the GMG game were not available at press deadline.

Four Spartans earn a fall at L-S Duals

Four different Collins-Maxwell wrestlers picked up a pin during the Lynnville-Sully Duals.

Blake Huntrods pinned William Kok in 2:57 at 145 and Marshall Day stuck Caden Spring in 2:32 at 195 for the Spartans during their dual with Moravia. Austin Boege pinned Cardinals' Brady Shook in 1:50 at 138 and Nathan Smith scored a fall over Lynnville-Sully's Kendrick Johnson in 4:40 at 132.

The other 11 Collins-Maxwell victories during the tournament all came by forfeit.
