TCT sports round-up: Ballard girls track team takes first at Bomber Relays

Ballard took first and Collins-Maxwell sixth in the girls' competition and the Bombers third and Spartans fifth in the boys' field at the Bomber Relays Co-ed track meet April 18 in Huxley.

The Bomber girls scored 138 points to beat Gilbert by 37 points for first. Collins-Maxwell finished with 49.2 points.

In the boys' division Ballard scored 93 points to come in behind Adair-Casey/Guthrie Center (156) and Central Springs (94). The Collins-Maxwell boys scored 58 points.

Last week also saw the Collins-Maxwell girls place first at the Bear Classic Relays in Brooklyn Friday. The Spartans scored 190 points to edge North Mahaska by 16 points for first out of 13 teams.

The Ballard boys golf team placed third at the Gilbert triangular held at the Veenker Memorial Golf Course in Ames April 18th with an 18-hole team score of 356. The Bomber girls golf team took third at the Nevada triangular April 17 with a 9-hole score of 216 and the Bombers edged Adel-Desoto-Minburn in a 9-hole dual meet April 18 at the Ballard Golf and Country Club, 212-215.

The Ballard girls tennis team thumped Grinnell by a 10-1 score in a dual April 18 at Grinnell. The Bomber girls placed second at the Knoxville Invitational Friday with 19 points.

The Ballard girls soccer team ran their winning streak to four games with victories over Winterset (3-0), Grinnell (5-0) and Carlisle (3-1) last week. The Bombers improved to 5-3 with the victories.

The Ballard boys soccer team fell at Winterset by a 2-0 score April 17 and at home to Carlisle by a 2-1 margin Friday in falling to 2-6 on the season.

Here is what we learned from last week's Ballard and Collins-Maxwell high school sports competition.

Ballard girls dominate Bomber Relays

The Ballard girls won six events and placed second in five more at the Bomber Relays.

Paityn Noe and Annika Larson went first and second in the 1,500-meter run for the Bombers. Noe won with the second-fastest 1,500 time in the state at four minutes, 40.49 seconds and Larson clocked in at 5:09.08.

Ally Baker won the 100 hurdles in 17.66 seconds. She edged West Marshall's Abby Tollefson, who finished in 17.81.

Ava Richardson won the girls' 800 in 2:35.95. ACGC's Ava Campbell placed second in 2:37.09.

Kasey Larson took first in the girls' high jump. Larson's winning jump was four feet, 10 inches.

The Ballard girls' 4X800 relay team of Noe, Brynn Wilson, Larson and Richardson placed first in 10:23.73. The Bombers easily topped ACGC's runner-up time of 11:03.39.

Ballard's shuttle hurdle team of Noel Boettger, Reagan Bartlett, Anya Jorgensen and Baker was victorious with a time of 1:14.10. The Bombers just edged West Marshall's 1:14.22 for first.

Ava Vance ran an 11:46.54 in the 3,000 for Ballard to take second to the 11:18.05 effort by Iowa Falls-Alden's Teah Miller. Boettger was second in both the 100 and 200 after running respective times of 13.40 and 27.54 to come in just behind the 13.21 and 27.42 efforts by IFA's Jaslynn Dagel.

The Bomber girls' 4X400 team of Boettger, Richardson, Kate Miller and Katie Tollefson clocked in at 4:33.72 to finish runner-up to IFA's 4:29.09.

Wilson took third in the 100 hurdles at 1:17.22 and Ellanora Loveland won a bronze medal in the long jump with a distance of 13-9.

Mary Staudt won the girls' discus and Cypress Erickson the long jump for the Collins-Maxwell girls at the Bomber relays.

Staudt threw 118-3 to easily outclass the runner-up throw of 92-6 by South Hamilton's Kendra Hoversten for first in the discus. She also came in third in the shot put with a toss of 34-9.25.

Erickson's best jump in the long jump was 14-10. She topped the 14-0.25 effort by Gilbert's Marissa Burke.

The Collins-Maxwell girls placed second in the sprint medley relay. The Spartan team of Marissa Boege, Erickson, Chloe Wierson and Hannah Kimberley finished in 2:01.11 to trail only West Marshall's 2:00.52.

Wierson tied for second in the high jump with a jump of 4-8.

Bomber boys win three events

The Ballard boys came out on top in three events at the Bomber Relays.

The Ballard sprint medley quartet of Jayden Swain, Jaden Peasley, Eli Rouse and Chance Lande took first in 1:37.45. The Bombers beat South Hamilton's 1:39.15 for the gold medal.

Trent Payne, Jameson Witt, Jackson Fleischmann and Lande placed first in the 4X800 with a time of 8:55.55. The Bombers easily bested the rest of the field, with Central Springs taking second in 9:33.13.

Individually, Rouse won the boys' 200 in 23.36. He easily beat the second-place time of 24.07 by Central Springs' Austin Lloyd.

Ballard's 4X400 team of Witt, Fleischmann, Rouse and Lande ran a 3:31.33 to place second to South Hamilton's 3:29.78. The Bomber distance medley team of Rouse, Swain, Fleischmann and Payne took third in 3:57.73.

The Bomber boys picked up a silver medal in the long jump after Swain jumped 19 feet, 5 inches to trail only the 20-1.5 jump by ACGC's Lance Bunde. Swain placed third in the 100 with a 12.49 effort and Witt won a bronze medal in the 400 with a 53.29 showing.

Kiir Wol won a bronze medal in the 110 high hurdles after crossing the finish line in 18.01 and Max Clark was third in the 400 hurdles after finishing in 1:07.25 for the Bombers.

The Collins-Maxwell boys also won three events during the meet.

Isaac Brown, Cooper Wierson, Josef Dvorak and Ethan Haus ran a 3:51.30 in the distance medley to edge Central Springs' 3:51.62 for the victory. Haus took first individually in the 1,600, running a 5:03.99 to beat out the 5:05.51 by ACGC's Gavin Sloss for the gold medal.

Luke Huntrods placed first in the boys' discus for Collins-Maxwell with a season-best throw of 151-11 to comfortably win over the 135-1 throw by Dowling Catholic JV's Isaiah Seymour. Dane Beattie placed third in the boys' long jump for the Spartans with a jump of 19-4.5.

Collins-Maxwell girls win eight gold medals at Bear Classic Relays

The Collins-Maxwell girls track team turned in a dominant performance at the Bear Classic Relays Friday.

The Spartans won four individual events and relays apiece. They also picked up nine silver medals during the meet.

Wierson won both the 100 and 200 dash races. She completed the 100 in 13.30 and 200 in 28.11, beating out English Valleys' Kayli Mohror's 13.44 in the 100 and the 28.56 by Mohror and HLV's Emma Roberts in the 200.

Ella Steward ran a 6:29.29 in the 1,500 to top the 6:39.58 by Melcher-Dallas' Addison Wadle for first. Boege ran a 17.59 in the 100 hurdles to edge out the 17.71 time of Belle Plaine's Alyssa Steinback for the gold medal.

Erica Houge, Kimberley, Sarah Tschantz and Boege ran a 57.47 in the 4X100 to top Tri-County's 1:01.42 for first. Houge, Opal Toornstra, Ava Hyde and Erickson finished the 4X200 in 2:09.68 to beat out Tri-County's 2:12.16 for the win and Boege, Houge, Tschantz and Kimberley ran a 2:09.05 in the sprint medley to edge Tri-County's 2:09.98.

Emma Pasquariello, Mia Huff, Clara Gregory and Steward placed first in the 4X800 with a time of 13:08.64.

Staudt was second in both the discus and shot put with respective distances of 112-3 and 32-11. English Valleys' Kennedy Axmear won the discus in 119-8 and Melcher-Dallas' Gabby Overgaard took first in the shot with a toss of 32-6.

Erickson jumped 14-1.5 in the long jump to take second to Mohror's 14-8.5. Wierson jumped 4-8 in the high jump to finish behind a 5-4 jump by Roberts and pick up the silver medal.

Pasquariello and Triona Scott were second and third in the 800 at 3:07.42 and 3:13.10. Scott and Ashlyn Davis placed second and third in the 3,000 with respective times of 13:47.43 and 13:52.75.

Kimberley ran a 1:22.14 in the 400 hurdles to finish runner-up to the 1:14.76 by Steinback. Huff was third in the 1,500 and 6:52.26 and Kimberley placed third in the 100 hurdles at 18.97.

The Collins-Maxwell 4X400 team of Ashlyn Leslie, Wierson, Erickson and Toornstra took second in 5:04.09. Toornstra, Gianna Pitcherello, Leslie and Hyde ran a 1:26.54 in the shuttle hurdle to take second behind Belle Plaine's 1:23.64.

Kaitlyn Zugay goes 3-0 at Knoxville for Ballard girls tennis team

Kaitlyn Zugay finished undefeated in singles play for the Ballard girls tennis team at the Knoxville Invitational.

Zugay scored 8-2 victories over Creston's Josie Mahan and Pella's Mallory Westerkamp. She also defeated Pella's Claire Smock by a 6-3 score. Vanessa Nop finished 5-1 in singles play for the Bombers after defeating Newton's Roxanna Almazan (8-1) and Paige Benson (8-3), Clarke's Molly Sickels (two 6-3 victories) and Mahan (1-0, 10-7) and losing to Knoxville's Janie Maasdam (9-7).

In doubles play Gracie Ross and Memphis Inglett topped Newton's Madison Rinehart and Izzy Wilson (8-5) and the Cardinal team of Ella Swarts and Olivia Hotchkin (8-1). They scored an 8-4 win over Creston's Kolbey Bailey and Brooklyn McKinney and suffered an 8-5 loss at the hands of Clarke's Madisyn McCoy and Ava Hagen.

Ellie Volkmann and Jocie Hobbs were 2-2 in doubles play for Ballard.

Volkmann and Hobbs defeated Creston's Ava Adamson and Sasha Wurster by an 8-5 score and Knoxville's Mackenzie Karr and Maddy Wells by a decisive 8-1 margin. The Bomber duo lost to Rinehart and Wilson by 6-3 decision and Pella's Alloree Else and Lily Van Dusseldorp in an 8-6 battle.

During Ballard's dual win over Grinnell the Bombers won all six matches and picked up five sweeps in singles play.

Zugay earned a pair of 6-1 victories over Grinnell's Leah Harris in the No. 1 singles match and Kiley Calvert and Ross each won by 6-3 and 6-4 decisions in the Nos. 2 and 3 matches over the Tigers' Mary Jacobson and Ali Wood, respectively. Nop swept Anna Key by 7-5 and 6-1 scores in the No. 4 match and Hobbs pulled off 7-5 and 6-2 victories over Greta Dodd in the No. 6 match.

Volkmann rebounded from a 7-6 loss to Grinnell's Ella Grife in the opening set of the No. 5 singles match. She won the second set by a 6-2 score and took the ultimate tiebreaker, 1-0 (10-8).

In doubles play the Bombers earned three sweeps. Calvert and Ross defeated Harris and Dodd by 7-6 (7-5) and 6-4 scores in the No. 1 match, Zugay and Nop won the No. 2 match over Jacobson and Grife by 6-1 and 7-6 (7-5) scores and Riley and Payton Askelsen teamed to win the No. 5 match over Grinnell's Daria Kline and Kennedy Harms by decisive 6-1 and 6-2 scores.

Ballard's No. 4 doubles team of Inglett and Adi Zeigler defeated Grinnell's Madison Hey and Zoe Stoner by a 6-1 score in the first set then rebounded from a 6-3 loss in the second to win the ultimate tiebreaker, 1-0 (10-8).

Maddie Kielsmeier leads Ballard girls golf team to victory

A strong individual round by Maddie Kielsmeier led the Ballard girls golf team past ADM.

Kielsmeier shot a 47 over nine holes to earn medalist honors. She beat the Tigers' Tess Kenny by four strokes for the victory.

Alliyah Thompson, Aubrey Estrem and Chastyn Gering all tied for fourth to round out the official scoring for Ballard. They each carded a 55.

Taylor Engstler placed 11th with a 60 and Breanna Kruger 12th with a 64 for the Bombers.

Brady Kruger, Andrew Princehouse place in top 10 for Ballard boys

Brady Kruger and Andrew Princehouse both placed in the top 10 individually for the Ballard boys golf team at the Gilbert triangular.

Kruger took seventh with an 18-hole score of 84. Princehouse came in ninth with an 88.

Lincoln Miller shot a 91 to finish 12th and Brenden Wright took 14th with a 93 as the other officially scored Bombers. Mason Gatchel finished 15th with a 97 and Jake Oldenkamp was 18th with a 111.

Gilbert's Brock Snyder was medalist with a 73 and the Tigers' Joey Currans was runner-up with a 76.

Big week gives Ballard a winning record in girls soccer

The Ballard girls soccer team went above .500 with its three victories last week.

The Bombers opened the week against Winterset. They scored twice in the first half and once in the second to pull away for the shutout victory.

Megan Rowedder tallied 1 goal and assist apiece and Amelia Faubus and Claire Landmesser each netted 1 goal. Katie Tollefson chipped in an assist and Maddie Catron made seven saves at keeper.

The Ballard girls picked up another shutout against Grinnell. The Bombers took charge with 3 goals in the first half and they put two more on the board in the second to coast to victory.

Tollefson and Rowedder each found the net twice and Landmesser put 1 goal on the board against Grinnell.

In the win over Carlisle the Bombers jumped out to a 2-0 lead. They maintained that edge through halftime and held on for the victory.

Landmesser put up 2 goals and Rowedder 1 against Carlisle. Tollefson and Faubus each had one assist and Catron made three saves.

Bomber boys soccer team gives Carlisle a good fight

The Ballard boys soccer team fell just short against Carlisle.

The Bombers came up short in a shootout. Each team scored 1 goal in the second half, then failed to find the net in either overtime period to result in the shootout.

Liam Hurst scored Ballard's goal in regulation off an assist from Caleb Lehmkuhl and Parker Becker made 15 saves at keeper. Gavin Pienkowski scored Carlisle's goal in regulation off a feed from Kael Streeter.

Shootout results were not available at press deadline.

Ballard gave up one goal in each half and ended up with a 15-5 deficit in shots on goal during its loss to Winterset.

Seth Pencook had two shots on goal and Lehmkuhl, Logan Huntrods and Wyatt Emery one apiece for Ballard in the loss. Becker made 16 saves in a losing effort.
