TCT sports round-up: Ballard wrestlers take second at Storm Invite, Erica Houge sets C-M record

The Ballard wrestling team placed second at the Storm Invitational and came up short in two duals and the Bomber girls wrestling team saw four wrestlers place first at the Ballard Scramble last week.

The Ballard wrestling team scored 222 points at the Storm Invite in Eldora to trail only Algona's 278 points among the six competing teams. The Bomber wrestlers lost to Bondurant-Farrar (49-27) and Winterset (43-31) in a pair of Raccoon River Conference duals Jan. 12 at Huxley.

Four of the five wrestlers competing for the Ballard girls wrestling team at the Ballard Scramble ended up placing first Jan. 9 at Huxley.

Erica Houge set a new single-game scoring record for the Collins-Maxwell girls basketball team in a 51-38 victory over Baxter Friday at Collins. The win put the Spartans in a tie for first with the Bolts in the Iowa Star Conference South Division with a 7-1 conference record.

The Collins-Maxwell girls also defeated BCLUW by a 46-26 score Jan. 10 and suffered a 45-40 non-conference loss to Lynnville-Sully Saturday in going to 11-3 on the season. Both games were at Maxwell.

The Collins-Maxwell boys basketball team defeated BCLUW, 50-39, and suffered a 90-40 setback against Baxter in going to 5-3 in the ISC South and 5-7 overall.

The Class 4A No. 5 Ballard girls basketball team took down Winterset at home Jan. 10, 47-24, and Adel-Desoto-Minburn in Adel Friday, 44-26, in going to 10-2 on the season and 7-2 in the Raccoon River Conference. The Bomber boys lost to Winterset (68-47) and ADM (73-53) in falling to 6-5 overall and 6-3 in the RRC.

The Collins-Maxwell wrestling team defeated HLV (36-12) and fell to Colfax-Mingo (48-30) in a double dual at Colfax Jan. 12. The Spartans also placed 17th at the Perry Invitational Saturday with 8 points.

Brody Sampson gets 100th win, places first at Storm Invite for Ballard

Brody Sampson scored the 100th victory of his career for the Ballard wrestling team last week.

Sampson, ranked third at 182 pounds in Class 2A by IAwrestle.com, moved his season record to 32-2 with a 5-0 showing at the Storm Invitational. He pinned Central Springs' Cordell Hoeft in 17 seconds, BCLUW-South Hardin's Sawyer Kane in 45 seconds, Central Springs' Camden Oliver in 1:32, Aplington-Parkersburg/Grundy Center's Colton Harken in 1:11 and Algona's Foster Myhre in 1:36.

Gabe Christensen, ranked sixth at 195, went 3-0 with two pins. Christensen received two byes then pinned teammate Gunnar Peterson in 1:03 and AP/GC's Carson Troyna in 5:03 before scoring a 16-5 major decision over Algona's Gavin Goche to push his season record to 31-1.

Henry Christensen, ranked fifth at 220, was also 3-0 with two pins and a victory by major decision. Henry received two byes then pinned Algona's Aiden Ulrich in 59 seconds, picked up a 12-3 major decision over Algona's Hunter Kollasch then pinned Central Springs' Colton O`hern in just 19 seconds.

Lane Kahler (145) and Rhett Hedrick (160) also took first for Ballard at the Storm Invitational.

Kahler was 3-0 with two pins and one victory by decision. He pinned AP/GC's Dylan Knaack in 26 seconds and Central Springs' Lincoln Blickenderfer in 50 seconds, received two byes then scored a 3-1 decision over Algona's Ashton Moreno.

Hedrick finished 4-0 with two pins, one win by major decision and a victory by decision. He earned an 11-3 major decision over Algona's Colby Jennings, pinned Algona's Cody Streit in 48 seconds, earned a bye, pinned AP/GC's Klayton Freed in 20 seconds and edged Central Springs' Rory Prazak II by a 9-7 decision.

Tucker Vitzthum (132) and Daniel Hyman (152) both finished second for Ballard. Vitzthum was 4-1 with four wins by fall and Hyman 4-1 with three falls and a win by decision.

Tony Horness (113), Jacob Harrison (126) and Luke Hartsook (170) each placed third for the Bombers. Horness picked up one fall, Harrison a win by decision and a victory by injury default and Hartsook three falls in five matches.

Peterson was fourth at 195 with one win by fall and Jayden Leland fifth at 138 with one pin.

During the home double dual Ballard scored four wins by fall and two by major decision against Winterset.

Horness pinned the Huskies' Liberto Iniesta in 57 seconds, Hedrick downed Zach Mortvedt in 40 seconds, Jackson Wacha defeated Carson Bellamy in 2:29 and Henry Christensen pinned Seth Vanderlinden in 1:24. Vitzthum took down Winterset's Nile Benge by a 12-4 major decision and Gabe Christensen also won by a 12-4 score over the Huskies' Jaydn Cooper at 220.

The Bombers delivered three wins by fall and one by decision in the loss to Bondurant-Farrar. They also picked up one forfeit.

Hedrick won by fall over the Bluejays' Marcus Teed in 1:06, Sampson stuck Trent Paxton in 2:47 and Henry Christensen pinned Keaton Harper in 40 seconds. Kahler won by a 7-4 decision over Porter Francois and Gabe Christensen received the forfeit.

Seniors shine for Bomber girls at Ballard scramble

Ballard's senior trio of Noel Boettger, Ally Baker and Caliegh Rhiner all placed first on senior night during the Ballard Scramble.

All three wrestlers went 3-0 during the meet, with all three of their victories coming by fall.

Boettger, ranked fifth at 135 pounds, pinned Gilbert's Annika Yoder-Stoulil in 16 seconds, Raccoon River-Northwest's Camden Wilson in 1:34 and West Marshall's Madelynn Grossnickle in 3:22. Baker downed Raccoon River-Northwest's Gracyn Baldwin in 3:09, Eagle Grove's Julia Gardner in 34 seconds and Carlisle's Alexis Hamm in 1:13.

Rhiner defeated Nevada's Gracie Schiller in 1:07, Carlisle's Elizabeth Peters in 2:24 and Saydel's Hunter Tenborg in 4:11.

Liberty Boettger also took first for Ballard. She went 2-0 by pinning Raccoon River-Northwest's Emma Bektic in 1:34 and Nevada's Kennedy Long in 58 seconds.

Ayla Ott was the other Ballard wrestler to compete during the meet. Ott placed third, losing to Southeast Polk's Clara Shogren by fall and West Marshall's Savannah Perry by injury default.

No team scoring was kept during the meet.

Erica Houge goes off for Spartan girls in big win over Baxter

Houge had the game of her life for the Collins-Maxwell girls against Baxter.

Houge went for a Collins-Maxwell record 40 points to carry the offensive load in the biggest win of the season for the Spartans. She made 12 of 29 field goals, 4 of 9 3-pointers and 12 of 18 free throws and added six rebounds, five steals and two assists.

Chloe Wierson tacked on 4 points and 11 rebounds, Vivian Kahler 4 points and two assists and Mary Staudt 3 points and seven rebounds.

Collins-Maxwell couldn't overcome a rough second half in the loss to Lynnville-Sully. The Spartans were outscored 31-19 over the final two quarters after taking a 21-14 lead at the half.

The Spartans forced 29 turnovers against the Hawks, but they only shot 24.5% from the field and were outrebounded, 42-30.

Houge had 19 points, seven rebounds, four steals and three assists in the loss. Wierson finished with 16 points, eight rebounds and one block, Staudt 3 points, eight rebounds and three steals, Kahler 2 points and five rebounds and Emma Pasquariello three steals.

Collins-Maxwell opened the week with its decisive win over BCLUW. The Spartans forced 27 turnovers and held the Comets to 25.6% shooting and just four attempts from the foul line.

Houge went for 23 points, nine steals, five rebounds and three assists. Wierson had a double-double with 10 points and an impressive 18 rebounds.

Marissa Boege added 5 points, rebounds and assists apiece. Staudt chipped in 4 points and four rebounds and Pasquariello also scored 4 points.

Collins-Maxwell boys overcome slow start against BCLUW

The Collins-Maxwell boys basketball team rebounded from a sluggish first quarter to down BCLUW.

The Spartans trailed 15-6 at the half. They pulled within four at halftime then took charge with a 19-5 run in the third quarter.

Luke Huntrods had a huge game for Collins-Maxwell in the win. He went for 22 points and 13 rebounds and added three blocks and two assists.

Jace Huntrods added 8 points and two assists, Ethan Haus 6 points and seven rebounds, Dane Beattie 6 points and four boards, Cooper Wierson 4 points and seven rebounds and Ian Beattie and Josef Dvorak 2 points and six rebounds apiece.

Collins-Maxwell simply couldn't find an answer for Baxter's red-hot shooting during its loss to the Bolts. Baxter shot an amazing 65.1% from the field on the night.

The Spartans were also hurt by a 20-6 turnover deficit and a poor 1 of 25 showing from 3-point range.

Luke Huntrods had 11 points and seven rebounds against Baxter. Dvorak finished with 10 points, five boards and two assists and Ian Beattie chipped in 6 points and two blocks.

Elite defense lifts Ballard girls to two RRC victories

The Ballard girls basketball team did a tremendous job shutting down both Winterset and ADM last week.

The Bombers held Winterset to 25.7% shooting and a 1 of 7 showing from 3-point range. They also forced 22 turnovers and held a slim 27-25 rebounding advantage.

Ballard led the Huskies 26-12 at the half. The Bombers iced the game by outscoring Winterset 11-2 in the fourth quarter.

Raegan Loewe scored 12 points off the bench and Alliyah Thompson and Paige Noe each had 10 points for Ballard in the win. Thompson also had eight rebounds, two assists and steals apiece and one block and Noe made 3 of 4 3-pointers and tallied five rebounds, three assists and three steals.

Kiley Calvert tacked on 6 points, six rebounds and three assists and Lily Hillebrand 6 points and four steals.

In the win over ADM the Bombers held the Tigers to 26.5% shooting and forced 19 turnovers. They also posted a 36-29 rebounding advantage.

Ballard's defense was especially stout in the second half versus the Tigers. The Bombers shut out ADM in the third quarter and held the Tigers to just seven points for the entire half.

Thompson had 12 points, nine rebounds, four steals and two blocks. Calvert finished with 9 points and three assists, Noe 5 points, seven assists and five rebounds, Hillebrand 5 points, Lily Beall 4 points, 10 rebounds and two assists and Loewe 4 points.

Ballard boys struggle against Huskies, Tigers

The Ballard boys basketball team saw its losing streak go to four games with the losses to Winterset and ADM.

The Bombers trailed by eight at the half then were outscored 42-29 over the final two quarters against Winterset. They only shot 37.5% from the field and made just 5 of 21 3-pointers.

Ballard also had 21 turnovers versus the Huskies.

Mason Gorsh had 14 points, four rebounds and three assists and steals apiece and Jude Gibson finished with 13 points and six rebounds for Ballard in the loss. Nolan Cogdill tacked on 11 points, four rebounds and one block.

In the loss to ADM the Bombers fell behind by 10 after one quarter and they were outscored 44-30 in the second half. Ballard shot 36.2% from the field compared to ADM's 53.2% effort and the Bombers were outrebounded, 35-23.

Gorsh and Owen Greco both scored 14 points and Gibson and Cogdill added 9 apiece against the Tigers. Gorsh also had five rebounds and two assists, Greco two steals and one block, Gibson six assists and three steals and Cogdill three rebounds.

Two Spartan wrestlers get a win at Perry

Collins-Maxwell saw two wrestlers get a victory on the mat during the Perry Invitational.

Ethan Haus was 1-3 at 106 with a fall over Saydel's Roman Kile in 1:04. Austin Boege went 1-3 at 132 with a pin in 3:50 over Woodward-Granger's Holden Heard.

Collins-Maxwell received two wins by fall and four victories by forfeit in its dual victory over HLV Jan. 12.

Boege pinned HLV's Landyn Ankrum in 1:03 at 138 and Blake Huntrods stuck the Warriors' Hayden Shafer in 1:14 at 145. Haus, Issac Brown (120), Nathan Smith (126) and Marshall Day (195) each received a forfeit.

In the loss to Colfax-Mingo the Spartans received pins from Boege, Huntrods, Day and Nathan Smith (126).

Boege pinned the Tigerhawks' James Cherveny in 1:22 at 132, Huntrods downed Sullivan Wilkins in 34 seconds at 138, Day bested Donavan Baucom in 1:27 at 220 and Smith scored a fall over Cesar Buenrostro in 4:38. Haus added a win by forfeit.
