TCT sports round-up for Sept. 12-18: Paityn Noe places second at Griak Invitational

Ballard senior Paityn Noe took second at the prestigious Roy Griak Invitational cross country meet in Minnesota Friday.

The top-ranked girls runner in Class 3A also won another top-notch meet at the Heartland Classic in Pella Sept. 17. As a team Ballard placed 23rd at the Griak Invite and ninth at the Heartland Classic.

With its top runners out resting, the Ballard girls team also placed seventh at the Tiger Invitational in Adel Sept. 18. The Bomber boys took second at the ADM meet.

Collins-Maxwell won both the boys and girls team titles at the West Marshall Invitational Sept. 25 at the Lincoln Valley Golf Course in State Center. The Spartan boys scored 46 points to beat Greene County's score of 68 for first out of six teams and the girls tallied a score of 28 to top the Trojans by 10 points for first out of four teams.

The Ballard volleyball team went 2-2 at the Nevada Invitational Saturday. The Bombers fell to Nevada in three sets (20-22, 22-20, 10-15) and Dallas Center-Grimes in two (losing 21-14, 21-16) and they swept Harlan (21-12, 21-14) and Des Moines Lincoln (21-8, 21-10) in going to 11-9 on the season.

The Bombers also lost a five-set battle to Carroll Sept. 20 in Huxley. The Bombers won the first and third sets by 25-22 an 25-12 scores and lost the second, fourth and fifth ones by 25-22, 25-21 and 15-13 scores in dropping to 1-5 in the RRC.

The Collins-Maxwell volleyball team defeated Meskwaki in five sets Sept. 22 and suffered a three-set loss to Grand View Christian Sept. 20. The win over Meskwaki put the Spartans at 2-15 on the season 2-4 in the Iowa Star Conference South Division.

Paityn Noe is sensational

Noe had a phenomenal week of competition for Ballard.

Noe won her first-ever Heartland Classic by crossing the finish line in 17 minutes, 28.7 seconds. Her time was 16 seconds faster than the runner-up showing of 17:44.5 by Sydney Drevlow of Hopkins (Minn.).

At the Griak Invitational Noe crossed the finish line in 18:08.1 to trail only the 17:37 run by Abbey Nechanicky of Wayzata, Minn. Noe beat the top 4A runner from Iowa, West Des Moines Valley's Addison Dorenkamp, by 12 seconds for the best time by an Iowa runner.

The Ballard girls scored 617 points at the Griak Invite. Wayzata won with a score of 113.

The other runners to compete for the Ballard girls were Annika Larson (41st in 19:55.2), Ava Vance (89th in 20:46.4), Ava Richardson (188th in 21:46.6), McKenzie Dee (297th in 22:58.4) and Raegan Loewe (316th in 23:30.3).

The Bomber girls, ranked fourth in 3A, scored 292 points at the Heartland Classic. Pella, the No. 1 team in 3A, won with a score of 143.

The other top runners for Ballard at the Heartland Classic were Larson (eighth in 19:29.4), Vance (32nd in 20:41.0), Richardson (94th in 21:42.4) and Dee (175th in 22:46.4).

The Ballard boys scored 75 points at Adel. ADM won the boys team title with 20 points.

Seth Pencook ran a 5k time of 18:23.4 to place ninth for the Bomber boys. Trent Payne was 15th in 19:00.9, Max Davidson 16th in 19:02.9, Jayden Leland 17th in 19:03.2 and Bradley Sage 18th in 19:26.5 as the other runners to score for Ballard.

ADM's Torin Timmerman won the boys race at Adel with a 17:16.8 showing.

Gracie Ross led a bunch of JV runners for the Ballard girls at Adel.

Ross took 26th in 25:26.8. Nora Loveland was 37th in 26:54.3, Audrey Zielke 41st in 27:19.8, Anya Jorgensen 42nd in 27:20.9 and Natalie Kruse 45th in 27:55.5 as the other Ballard girls to pick up points at Adel.

ADM's Geneva Timmerman won the girls race in 18:45.4.

Spartans dominate

Both Collins-Maxwell cross country teams were at the top of their game at the West Marshall Invite.

Ethan Haus ran an 18:50.88 to win the boys race by a full 1:10.74 for the Spartans. Hunter Lee and Austin Hennick were sixth and seventh with respective times of 20:34.67 and 20:38.42, Silas Kimberley 14th in 21:41.93 and Isaiah Hill 18th in 22:00.27.

Triona Scott led the Collins-Maxwell girls with a fourth-place 5k time of 24:55.70 and Cypress Erickson and Chloe Wierson were seventh and eighth with respective times of 25:47.29 and 26:08.63. Ashlyn Davis and Erica Houge were 10th and 11th with respective times of 26:41.97 and 26:43.77 and Sarah Tschantz just missed the scoring cut with a 12th-place time of 26:58.63.

West Marshall freshman Addie Thompson won the girls race in 24:11.25.

Ballard volleyball team hangs tough

The Ballard volleyball team held its own at Nevada.

Brooklyn Baumgardner had 24 kills and 16 blocks for Ballard during the tournament. Memphis Inglett added 17 kills and nine blocks, Brenna Baumgardner 13 blocks and 12 kills, Alliyah Thompson 12 kills and four blocks and Kate Miller 13 kills.

Riley Askelsen handed out 57 assists and Volkmann dished out 22 at Nevada.  Payton Askelsen led Ballard in digs during the tournament with 29 and Ella Ashworth finished with four aces serving the ball.

In the loss to Carroll Inglett had 14 kills and six blocks, Brooklyn Baumgarnder 13 kills and nine blocks, Brenna Baumgardner six kills and 10 blocks, Miller nine kills and Thompson seven kills and four blocks.

Riley Askelsen handed out 28 assists and Ally Baker 25 against Carroll. Payton Askelsen finished with 16 digs and three aces.

C-M volleyball team gets ISC South win

The Collins-Maxwell volleyball team saw Marissa Boege hammered down 14 kills, Ella Steward seven and Payton Steele three in its victory over Meskwaki.

Haylee Merryman and Gracie Leslie both handed out 12 assists. Merryman had 18 digs, Boege 14, Leslie 11, Steele and Vivian Kahler nine apiece and Hannah Kimberley seven.

Merryman also finished with four aces and Boege and Steward chipped in three apiece.
