TCU men’s basketball coach Jamie Dixon had a simple question when he arrived at the postgame news conference.

“Have fun?” Dixon said, smiling. “Students had fun, I think. I hope. Gosh, it was great to see them there and great to have a home-court advantage second-to-none. That was tremendous. Boy, it’d be great if we could do that every night. Hopefully we’ll play better.”

Well, TCU played well enough on Saturday afternoon, hanging on for a thrilling 59-58 overtime victory over Oklahoma at Schollmaier Arena. The Horned Frogs (12-2, 2-1 Big 12) snapped an eight-game losing streak to the Sooners (12-5, 2-3).

Dixon and his players repeatedly praised the crowd afterward. It was one of the liveliest environments in Schollmaier history. TCU announced that 7,175 attended the game, the fifth-most in stadium history, including a record 2,144 students.

“We feed off them,” junior forward Emanuel Miller said.

“Love it. Love it,” senior forward Chuck O’Bannon, Jr. added. “That was amazing. Credit to them, too, for this win. That was huge. The crowd was big for us.”

O’Bannon played a starring role, making what proved to be the game-winning 3-pointer with 27.3 seconds left in overtime. He started the game 0 for 5 from deep.

“All game I couldn’t get the 3 ball to fall, but it felt good all day,” O’Bannon said. “My next shot I always expect to go in and that’s exactly what happened at the end of the game.”

After O’Bannon’s basket, Oklahoma scored quickly to cut the lead to one on a layup by Elijah Harkless. TCU’s Mike Miles then missed the front end of a one-and-one with 10.5 seconds left, giving OU a chance to win it at the buzzer.

But Harkless missed a contested jumper from the right elbow as time expired.

“We battled, we scrapped, we came up with loose balls and then we finally executed down the stretch on the 3 (by O’Bannon),” Dixon said. “Great defense on a couple of those plays down the stretch, too. I thought it was tremendous defense at the end — stayed down, stayed big and did what we wanted to do.”

TCU could’ve easily folded going into overtime. The Frogs had an opportunity to secure the victory in regulation but failed to do so.

With a chance to extend a 50-48 lead with 6.7 seconds left, TCU guard Damion Baugh missed the front-end of a one-and-one. Baugh briefly made up for it by blocking a 3-point attempt by OU’s Umoja Gibson with 1.4 seconds left.

However, OU tied it with a nifty BLOB (baseline out of bounds) play that found Jalen Hill open for an easy layup. That sent the Sooners into overtime with seemingly all the momentum but the Frogs persevered.

“We’re going to fight to the end,” said Miller, who finished with eight points and six rebounds. “We knew that if we had another chance to go into overtime, we just had to close it out.”

O’Bannon and sophomore guard Micah Peavy tied for the TCU lead with 11 points. Miles, averaging 17.8 points per game, finished with six points on 3 of 12 shooting but made the assist on O’Bannon’s game-winning 3 in overtime.

“They came out to take the ball away from Mike, trap him on ball screens,” Dixon said. “All of us didn’t do a good job of adjusting to that. That’s on me. Very rarely were we where we needed to be. Give them credit. They’re good. They’re really good. This is the league.

“There’s probably eight other coaches saying the same thing about how good the league is. There is nothing like it. I just like our fans to see it and enjoy it and our people to recognize it. You have the best basketball in the country played here in Fort Worth.”

TCU travels to Oklahoma State for its next game on Wednesday. Tip-off is set for 7 p.m. in Stillwater.
