Teacher Accused Of Leaving Kids Home Alone For 2 Days: CT News

On Monday night, Gov. Ned Lamont's office shared the latest coronavirus numbers from the holiday weekend. The key health metrics are slowly starting to move in the right direction.

The infection rate, which a couple of weeks ago had exceeded 28 percent, is now down to 17 percent in the latest update. And more importantly, the number of hospitalizations continues its recent trend of declining slowly, this time down another 38 beds.

Since the pandemic began, 653,416 coronavirus cases have been reported in CT out of 14.1 million tests administered and there are 1,857 people currently hospitalized due to COVID-19, state officials reported.

In the accompanying news release, Lamont's office notes: "Of the 1,857 patients currently hospitalized with laboratory-confirmed COVID-19, 1,253 (67.5%) are not fully vaccinated.

"For the week beginning January 2, 2022, unvaccinated persons had a 3.4x greater risk of testing positive for COVID-19 compared to fully vaccinated persons. For the week beginning January 2, 2022, unvaccinated persons had an 18.6x greater risk of dying from COVID-19 compared to fully vaccinated persons." (See the town-by-town COVID-19 updates below).


CT teacher accused of leaving 2 children home alone for 2 days: PD

Kerry Lyn Caviasca, a Waterbury teacher and Watertown resident, is accused of leaving two children, both under the age of 12, home alone for two days, while she traveled out of state, according to media reports, including WTNH News 8.

She is on leave from her job, News 8 reports. She is charged with two counts of risk of injury to a minor and two counts of second-degree reckless endangerment, WFSB 3 TV reports.

In a statement, Waterbury Public Schools said they learned of a "pending allegation" concerning a staff member, according to Fox 61.

"The alleged actions do not represent the values of our district. The teacher has been placed on leave while the District conducts an investigation," the Waterbury schools statement concludes, via Fox 61. No other details have been released.
