Teacher, students honored in DAR annual awards ceremony

HOLLAND — A teacher and several students received awards for their dedication to American history and education during an annual reception last week from the Elizabeth Schuyler Hamilton (Holland) Chapter of the National Society for the Daughters of the American Revolution.

Heather Remy received the 2022-2023 DAR Outstanding Teacher of American History Award during the ceremony at Herrick District Library on Monday, Nov. 14. Remy teaches history at Creekside Middle School in Zeeland.

To be selected for the award, a teacher must teach American history, have incisive knowledge he or she readily shares with students, foster a spirit of patriotism and demonstrate the ability to relate history to modern life and events.

Teachers must also complete a dossier and submit three letters of support.

Elizabeth LeFebre, a senior at Holland High School, won the DAR Good Citizen Award Essay Contest with her piece titled, "Our American Heritage and Our Responsibility for Preserving It." Her paper has been submitted to the Michigan DAR for state honors.

A dozen other high school seniors were chosen for the 2022-2023 DAR Good Citizen Award.

Henry Mulder, a junior at Holland High School, received the 2022-2023 DAR American History Essay Content Award.
