Teachers can get a $20 Sam’s Club membership for a limited time. What to know

Sam’s Club is offering teachers discounted memberships just as back-to-school season gets into full swing.

For a limited time, state-licensed and certified educators can get a basic membership for $20 online and in Sam’s Clubs stores nationwide starting July 17, the wholesale club announced.

The membership will be valid for one year.

The offer is available through Aug. 15 to new members who are pre-K through 12th grade teachers, school staff, principals, assistant principals, and college and university professors, according to a news release.

A basic Sam’s Club membership costs $50 a year and includes benefits such as same-day delivery and the option to add someone from your household, according to the club’s website.

For $110 a year, a Plus membership has the same perks, in addition to free shipping, curbside pickup and discounts on Sam’s Club services.

“We know that educators continue to dip into their own wallets to pay for classroom supplies, and we want to help ease the burden this year,” Scott Ludwig, vice president of membership at Sam’s Club, said in a statement.

Educators spent an average $820 of their own money on classroom supplies during the 2022-2023 school year — an increase from about $500 prior to the COVID-19 pandemic, according to a My E-Learning World analysis cited by the National Education Association.

Teachers reported out-of-pocket spending on an array classroom necessities from binders, notebook paper and crayons to hand sanitizer, snacks and soap, the association said.
