‘Our team feels terrible;’ Honda executive speaks on payroll issues impacting plant workers

Last month, workers at an area Honda plant shared their frustrations over payroll issues with some still waiting for money owed to them.

The company has previously stated that two different systematic failures took place during their switch to a new payroll processing company and bi-weekly checks.

Bob Nelson, executive vice president of American Honda Motor Company spoke with News Center 7 Wednesday afternoon about these issues.

“First of all, I’d like to say I feel terrible that we’ve impacted our associates and I have apologized to them. Our team feels terrible. It’s certainly not our intention, we have had problems, and we’re working through those problems,” Nelson said.

Nelson said the company hopes to have all payroll issues resolved by the end of this month.

He said the company has taken three measures to address the issue.

The first measure was the company made a correction so the issues would not be continued for the next payroll period.

Next, he said Honda offered free interest loans at the federal credit union for workers with problems paying bills.

Although some workers have previously told News Center 7 that they are skeptical of accepting these loans.

“I think we’re done paying the company back. I think we just want to get what we’re owed this time,” a worker who wished to remain anonymous said.

Third, if Honda associates have faced any late fees or penalties due to being shorted they can submit for reimbursement, Nelson said.

“They’re working very hard on this and we expected by the end of the month that we can have those problems resolved,” he said.
