It was the first #critbeef showdown, and it did not disappoint. (Though there was some disappointment for us viewers at home, when the free livestream on usacrits.tv went down in the middle of the pro men’s race the first night... but we digress.)

Team L39GION of Los Angeles went out and dominated both the women’s and men’s pro races at Tulsa Tough this past weekend, from June 11 to June 13.

The race is made up of three stages, with crits taking place each evening. L39ION riders took the win in all three stages, in both the men’s and women’s pro categories, and nearly swept the podiums.

L39GION newcomer Skylar Schneider set the tone for the rest of the weekend at the opening pro women’s race, maintaining a strong position at the front throughout the race and sprinting to seal the win. Her teammate Kendall Ryan also came in third the first night, while Maggie Coles-Lyster of DNA Pro Cycling came in second.

Justin Williams then claimed the first victory for the pro men Friday night, followed closely by his brother Cory in second and Danny Estevez from Best Buddies Racing in third. While emotions may have run high over social media in the weeks leading up to Tulsa Tough, fueling the stoke for this year’s crit season, it was nothing but smiles and sportsmanship all around at the podium.

And that was just day one.

The L39GION women proved their podiums were no mistake the very next day, with Ryan this time taking the win and Schneider taking second. And Schneider kept her streak going by taking the victory on the third day.

Likewise with the men, Cory Williams powered through to win the second day’s stage and came in second yet again on Sunday. Teammates Tyler Williams and Ty Magner came in second and third, respectively (with Justin in a close fourth). Tyler and Cory swapped places for the last stage, with Tyler coming in first this time.

The general classification victories at the end of the weekend went to Skylar Schneider of L39GION for the pro women and Cory Williams of L39GION for the pro men.

The weekend was also marked by the memory of the Tulsa race massacre of 1921—in which the local wealthy Black neighborhood, known as Black Wall Street, was destroyed by a white mob, killing an estimated several hundred Black residents.

“100 years later [L39GION] is the only black-owned pro team in the world. Last night is dedicated to Black Wall Street and the incredible people that lived and thrived there. The injustice hasn’t been reconciled, but absolutely needs to be,” Justin Williams said in an Instagram post.

Tulsa Tough was just the start of the USA Crits Series. The next race in the series is the Twilight Criterium in Boise, Idaho on July 10.
