Team Maxi or Mini? Katie Holmes Makes the Case for a Shortened Hemline

For fall, hemlines are torn between two worlds—long maxis and short minis. The season’s runways had both: At Paco Rabanne, the skirts were long and in fun fabrics such as floral and polkadot silks; at Saint Laurent, meanwhile, the sequin cocktail dresses were cut well above the thigh. No matter your preference, there’s an option for everyone. Celebrities have been doing both, too: stars such as Kim Kardashian West and Priyanka Chopra have been opting for maxis, while models such as Bella Hadid have favored the sexy mini instead. The latest trendsetter to enter the skirt debate? Katie Holmes.

Last night, the actress attended the opening of the new Nordstrom flagship store in New York City—and it seems she’s team mini. For the event, she wore a black Saint Laurent minidress in silk satin, complete with a sharp shoulder line and a draped waistline. To give the shortened hemline more of a sophisticated spin, though, she offset the look with sheer polka-dot tights and chic black pumps, resulting in a more elegant, evening-appropriate feel. In her hand, she also carried a mini patent minaudière bag with a gold chain—just big enough to carry a lipstick and, well, that’s about it. (Because luxury is not having to carry any personal belongings, after all.)

So, if the idea of a drastically short skirt gives you dressing anxiety—fear not! If Holmes is anything to go by, add some hosiery underneath and the raunch factor is instantly dialled down.
