Teen who drowned in Lake Norman was South Meck student-athlete
The body of a missing Lake Norman boater has been found. On Monday, Channel 9 learned the victim was a student-athlete at a local high school.
The search began on Saturday around 9:05 p.m. near marker D9. Units from Cornelius-Lemley Fire Rescue worked with Sherills Ford-Terrell Fire and Rescue to continue the search on Sunday.

On Sunday evening, the department announced they found the body of the missing boater during the afternoon.
South Mecklenburg High School’s rugby team posted a tribute to the victim, Keith Austin. The statement said he had an infectious smile and inspired others to be great.
South Meck is planning a memorial and is offering counseling to anyone who needs it.

Charlotte-Mecklenburg Schools sent the following message to families about Austin’s death:
“Dear South Mecklenburg families, this is Principal Mark Angerer sharing some sad news.
“It’s with a heavy heart that I share news of the death of one of our students, Keith Austin. We are heartbroken by this loss of life, and we grieve with the student’s family and friends.
“The death of a child is always a sad and troubling event and can often have a profound effect on the student’s friends and classmates. It is extremely important for children to have an opportunity to talk through their feelings and reactions in an age appropriate manner.
“Grief counseling services are always available for any student or staff member who needs it. In times like these, we must continue to come together and support each other. Please know that we stand with all of you, and we gain strength by helping one another through this difficult time
“We are planning a memorial to remember this Keith, a student athlete and friend to many. A member of the football team, Keith was very close to his teammates, his coaches and the athletic directors.
“Again, our condolences go out to the student’s family, and we ask that you keep them in your thoughts as well.”
