FORT LEE — The Teaneck Democratic Municipal Committee honored former New Jersey state Sen. Loretta Weinberg at its first annual gala dinner on Wednesday night.

The gala at the Doubletree by Hilton was the first in a series of annual events the committee will host "honoring a different person each year who shares the ideals of the committee," said event chair Quon Gee.

“We expect that about 300 of Bergen County’s most influential citizens — including business owners, community advocates and elected officials — will attend to show their appreciation for Senator Weinberg's outstanding contributions,” committee Chair Alexandra Soriano-Taveras said before the event. “We have a stellar guest list and dynamic entertainment lineup to ensure the evening is a fitting tribute to Senator Weinberg's incredible legacy.”

Weinberg is 88 years old and has been one of the most powerful women in New Jersey politics over the last 20 years.

She began her political life as a Democratic campaign organizer for Lyndon Johnson in 1964, eventually serving a term on the Teaneck Township Council from 1990 to 1994. She served as an assemblywoman from 1992 to 2005 and as state senator for the 37th District from 2005 to 2022. She also served as Senate majority leader. She ran unsuccessfully for lieutenant governor with Jon Corzine in 2009.

After her retirement, Weinberg joined the board of directors of Horizon Blue Cross Blue Shield of New Jersey.
