Tears shed after young Red Sox fan launches ultimate Father’s Day gift back onto field

A Father’s Day trip to Fenway Park had devolved into a mess of tears and frustration.

A foul ball had just careened down the left field where the Mulligan family was taking in the first game of a Red Sox- Yankees doubleheader. Mike, a fan sitting a few rows ahead of the Mulligans, collected the ball and immediately turned to hand the ball to Charlie, the youngest of two boys.

And Charlie did what everyone knows you do with a baseball.

You throw it.

As his father and older brother Jack looked on, appalled, Charlie reeled back and launched a throw that would’ve made Yaz proud.

Jack was understandably upset after the toss and a river of tears began to flow.

NESN play-by-play man Dave O’Brien and color commentator Will Middlebrooks were similarly stunned by the moment.

“This is a Father’s Day never to be forgotten,” O’Brien coined.

“I feel that pain!” Middlebrooks exclaimed.

The Mulligan is sure to leave the ballpark with smiles though. Red Sox team representatives stopped by a few innings later, gifting a signed jersey and ball from Red Sox closer Kenley Jansen from the club. As the dad consoled a still-emotional Charlie, NESN’s Jahmai Webster also stopped by, dropping off two balls signed by the NESN production crew to the family’s treasure trove.

“Nice throw kid,” penned Middlebrooks.

“Thanks for being so nice to us,” said the boy’s father, Pat Mulligan.
