Teatro Vista, City Lit and AstonRep Theatre Company announce 2022-23 seasons

Latino theater company Teatro Vista, City Lit Theater and AstonRep Theatre Company have all announced their 2022-2023 seasons. The upcoming seasons include world premieres, in-person shows and digital offerings. It also marks AstonRep’s final season.

Teatro Vista

Teatro Vista’s upcoming season, which will be the company’s second with Lorena Diaz and Wendy Mateo as co-artistic directions, is themed “Shadow Work.”

“Enough to Let the Light In” (Sept. 21-Oct. 23 at Steppenwolf’s 1700 Theater, 1700 N. Halsted St.): Written by Paloma Nozicka, the show is a fast-paced, psychological thriller about girlfriends Marc and Cynthia. This in-person world premiere will be part of the Destinos Chicago International Latino Theater Festival.

“The Dream King” (performance dates and venue TBA): This silent musical by Teatro Vista ensemble member Marvin Quijada tells the story of a man who falls in love with a woman in his dreams using movement, projections and puppetry.

Upcoming digital productions include “La Vuelta,” a film that explores the idea of our existence having ripple effects that go beyond us, as well as the second season of serial fiction podcast “The Fifth World.”

City Lit Theater

City Lit’s 42nd season kicks off in October. Unlike previous years, this season will include three productions instead of four in order to get the company back on a more typical schedule following pandemic-related delays.

“The Mark of Kane” (Oct. 21 - Dec. 4, City Lit Theatre at 1020 W. Bryn Mawr Ave.): This world premiere is about two friends who created the comic book character Batman in 1939 and the different trajectories their lives take. This is the first play in Mark Pracht’s “The Four-Color Trilogy.”

“The Birthday Party” (Jan. 13, 2023 - Feb. 26, 2023, at City Lit Theatre, 1020 W. Bryn Mawr Ave.): In Harold Pinter’s dark comedy, Stanley has lived in Meg’s boardinghouse for a year. He’s nervous about the arrival of two new boarders, and Meg is throwing him a party.

“Aztec Human Sacrifice” (May 5, 2023 - June 18, 2023, at City Lit Theatre, 1020 W. Bryn Mawr Ave.): The season ends with the world premiere of this musical. The evening before the start of the Aztec empire’s new millennium, the Chosen One has run off with the Emperor’s daughter, which could lead to the end of the world.

AstonRep Theatre Company

This will be AstonRep’s 15th and final season.

“We cannot express enough gratitude for our phenomenal supporters and loyal audiences whom we have been so honored to move, entertain and inspire,” AstonRep founder and ensemble member Robert Tobin said in the announcement. “Our work would obviously be nothing without them. We are grateful to celebrate and reflect on a truly great run.”

“Buried Child” (Oct. 21 - Nov. 19 at The Edge Theater, 5451 N. Broadway): This Pulitzer Prize-winning play by Sam Shepard is about a family reunion no one anticipated and the disintegration of the American Dream.

The 15th Annual Writer’s Series (Feb. 4, 2023): This festival, which will have virtual performances, gives Chicago-based and national playwrights a chance to workshop almost-finished plays and other works that are still in development.

“The Language Archive” (April 28, 2023 - May 28, 2023, at The Edge Off-Broadway Theatre, 1133 W. Catalpa Ave.): This quirky, comic drama about communication won the 2010 Susan Smith Blackburn Prize for Playwriting. It tells the story of a scientist fighting to preserve the dying languages of far-flung cultures, only to neglect his own.
