DUBAI, United Arab Emirates — Texas Tech's Ludvig Aberg shook off an opening bogey to shoot 7-under-par 65 Friday and share the first-round lead at the rain-delayed Dubai Desert Classic.

Aberg made 5 on the par-4 No. 1, then rolled in eight birdies over the next 15 holes at Emirates Golf Club and sat alongside Ryder Cup star Ian Poulter.

Aberg is playing on an exemption based on his finishing the fall at No. 1 on the PGA Tour University ranking. The 2022 Ben Hogan Award winner also is No. 1 in the World Amateur Golf Ranking.

Former Tech player Hurly Long shot 4-over 76 in the first round.

Aberg and the Red Raiders start the spring season Feb. 8-10 at the Amer Ari Invitational in Waikoloa, Hawaii.

The competition will conclude on Monday, organizers said. Play had been suspended Thursday because of fading light following earlier delays from overnight rain that left the course unplayable.
