Tech hosts WVU in matchup of struggling Big 12 teams

The Texas Tech volleyball team will try to snap an eight-match losing when the Red Raiders host West Virginia in Big 12 action at 1 p.m. Saturday at the United Supermarkets Arena.

Tech (14-12, 3-10) is in eighth place in a nine-team Big 12, one spot ahead of West Virginia (7-20, 0-14).

Kenna Sauer, Reagan Cooper and Brooke Kanas led Tech in kills with 389, 257 and 216, respectively. The Red Raiders have gotten 911 assists from Reese Rhodes, 315 digs from Maddie Correa and 99 and 88 blocks, respectively, from Kanas and Karrington Jones.

LCU men's basketball

Former NAIA rivals Lubbock Christian University and Southern Nazarene square off for the first time in 10 years when the two meet at 3 p.m. Saturday at the Sawyer Center in Bethany, Oklahoma.

LCU (1-1) is ranked No. 16 in the NCAA Division II by the National Association of Basketball Coaches, and Southern Nazarene (1-1) is ranked No. 12. The Crimson Storm have won the Great American Conference each of the past three years and finished 21-10 last season.

First-team all-GAC honoree Tyler McGhie averaged 17.5 points per game last season and is averaging 15.5 points per game this season. He's a 6-foot-5 sophomore from Denton Guyer who transferred to SNU from Western Carolina. Adokiye Iyaye is the SNU scoring leader with a 17.0-point average. He's a 6-3 senior from Oklahoma City who went to SNU as a graduate transfer from UT-San Antonio.

LCU is getting 25.5 points and 5.0 rebounds per game from junior forward Rowan Mackenzie and 11.5 points and 3.5 rebounds per game from sophomore guard Najeeb Muhammad.

WBU men's basketball

DALLAS — Shallowater graduate Josh Servantez scored 21 points, leading a cast of five double-digit scorers, as No. 12 Wayland Baptist beat the University of North Texas-Dallas 97-85 Thursday night in the Pioneers' Sooner Athletic Conference opener.

B.J. Simmons scored 18 points for Wayland (4-0, 1-0), followed by R.J. Mason with 15 and Parrish Hewitt and D'Michael Bellfield with 12 apiece.

Wayland is back in action against Southwestern Assemblies of God (5-1, 1-0) at 5 p.m. Saturday in Waxahachie.W

WBU women's basketball

DALLAS — Zyunn Cormier poured in 32 points, leading the University of North Texas-Dallas to a 70-62 victory over No. 11 Wayland Baptist on Thursday night in a Sooner Athletic Conference opener.

Mykala Dumas added 12 points for UNT-Dallas (3-0, 1-0).

Wayland (3-2, 0-1) got 14 points from Kaitlyn Edgemon, 13 points and 12 rebounds from Jenna Cooper-Jackson and 12 points from Taryn Shultz, her career high.

The Flying Queens take on Southwestern Assemblies of God (2-3, 1-0) on Saturday in Waxahachie.

LCU cross country

Lubbock Christian University men's and women's teams will run Saturday in the NCAA South Central Region meet in Denver.

The men's 10-kilometer race is scheduled for 11:30 a.m. CST, followed by the women's 6-kilometer race at 12:45 p.m. CST.

LCU's top runners include Idalou graduate Madelyn Merrell, an all-Lone Star Conference performer who has four consecutive top-20 finishes, and Christ The King graduate Colby Sandoval, who has paced the Chaparrals in every race this season.

The top three finishing teams at the regional advance to the NCAA Division II championships Dec. 2 at University Place, Washington. Ten at-large teams will be selected by the NCAA Division II Men's and Women's Cross Country Committee. The top two individual runners from non-qualifying teams qualify automatically, as does any individual from a non-qualifying team who finishes in top five overall. Eight more selections nationally are also made.
