Texas Tech coach Mark Adams landed a commitment Wednesday from Drew Steffe, a 6-foot-5 shooting guard from Frisco Memorial. Steffe, a junior, is averaging nearly 17 points per game on a 23-3 team.

Mark Adams' Texas Tech basketball team is ranked No. 13 in The Associated Press Top 25 this week, but the Red Raiders are in the bottom half of the Big 12 in 3-point shooting, both in percentage and in 3s made.

In other words, the Red Raiders are a good team that's short on long-range marksmen, both attributes that could be selling points to Drew Steffe.

The 6-foot-5, 175-pound shooting guard from Frisco Memorial made a non-binding commitment to Texas Tech on Wednesday night. Steffe is a junior this season and the first pledge for the Red Raiders' 2023 recruiting class.

Steffe is averaging 16.9 points per game for Frisco Memorial, which is 23-3 and 12-0 in District 9-5A. The Warriors have won 16 games in a row since drop back-to-back tournament games on Dec. 3.

The 247Sports recruiting service ranks Steffe as the No. 8 recruit in Texas among high-school juniors and No. 69 in the nation. Rivals recruiting service ranks him as the No. 136 prospect in the country for his class.

He is known to have scholarship offers from at least 17 Division I programs. In November, he told 247Sports he narrowed his choices to Tech, Colorado, St. Louis, TCU and Xavier.

Texas Tech forward Kevin McCullar is one of 15 players named to the watch list released Thursday for the Naismith defensive player of the year.

The Red Raiders lead the Big 12 and rank 15th out of 350 NCAA Division I teams in lowest opponent shooting percentage at 38.2 percent. They rank third in the Big 12 and 18th in Division I in scoring defense with a yield of 60.8 points per game.

McCullar, a 6-foot-6 junior from San Antonio Wagner, is averaging 11.0 points, 4.7 rebounds and 1.6 steals per game.

Two other Big 12 players are on the watch list: Iowa State guard Tyrese Hunter and Baylor forward Jonathan Tchamwa-Tchatchoua
