Tech named one of world's top universities

Jun. 27—Texas Tech University has been named one of the world's top universities, according to one of the world's most-consulted university rankings.

The 2024 edition of the QS World University Rankings, released Tuesday by global higher education analyst QS Quacquarelli Symonds, ranks Texas Tech No. 801-850 in the world, and No. 121 in the U.S.

"Texas Tech continues to build on its history of world-class scholarship, which has contributed to our stature as a preeminent national research university," Texas Tech President Lawrence Schovanec said in a news release. "Collaboration is fostered here, and creative ideas are turned into innovative solutions. It's gratifying that the QS World University Rankings, one of the world's most viewed and significant university rankings, continues to recognize us."

In celebration of the 20th anniversary of the ranking and to reflect the growth in data availability and changing priorities of students and society, QS has implemented the largest methodological enhancements since its inception, introducing three new metrics: sustainability, employment outcomes and internal research network. The weights of some existing indicators also were adjusted, namely academic reputation, employer reputation and faculty-student ratio.

"The 2024 QS World University Rankings represents a major step in the evolution of the exercise, marking the most significant innovation in its methodological paradigm since its inception two decades ago," said QS Senior Vice President Ben Sowter. "More than ever, it aligns with Gen Z and Alpha priorities, providing institutions with a unique lens through which to assess their performance in areas paramount to shaping a brighter future for generations to come."

This year's QS World University Rankings is the largest ever, with nearly 3,000 evaluated universities across 104 locations. The results account for the distribution and performance of 17.5 million academic papers published between 2017 and 2021 and the 141.6 million citations received by those papers. They also account for the expert opinions of more than 144,000 academic faculty and more than 98,000 employers worldwide.
