Tech track trio honored with Big 12 awards

Texas Tech's Wes Kittley, Caleb Dean and Antoine Andrews were among those honored with Big 12 indoor track and field awards announced Thursday.

Kittley was named the Big 12 coach of the year, Dean the men's performer of the year and Andrews the men's outstanding freshman.

Kittley last weekend led the Red Raiders to their third conference championship in six years. The Tech men won five individual events and scored 159 points, third most in the meet's 27-year history.

Dean won the conference title in the 60-meter hurdles in a meet record time of 7.52 seconds with Andrews finishing second. Dean took third in the 60 meters, giving him 16 points in the two events.

Dean and Andrews rank second and fourth in NCAA Division I in the 60-meter hurdles.

Baseball

No. 16 Texas Tech, after 10 home games to start the season, goes on the road for the first time this weekend for the Shriners Children's College Classic at Minute Maid Park in Houston.

Tech (10-0) plays Rice (3-5) at 11 a.m. Friday, Michigan (4-4) at 11 a.m. Saturday and No. 15 Texas A&M (5-3) at 7 p.m. Sunday. Also in the field are No. 10 Louisville (7-1) and No. 12 TCU (5-3).

The Red Raiders' starting rotation for the games, coach Tim Tadlock said, will be Brendan Girton (2-0, 1.64 earned-run average) on Friday, Mason Molina (1-0, 1.93) on Saturday and Taber Fast (0-0, 5.14) on Sunday.

Tech has swept four-game series against Gonzaga and Western Ilinois and a two-game series against Air Force. Gonzaga and Air Force both were NCAA tournament teams last season.

Men's golf

ORLANDO, Fla. — Texas Tech's Ludvig Aberg eagled the par-5 16th hole at Bay Hill on the way to shooting 2-under-par 70 in Thursday's first round of the Arnold Palmer Invitational.

The eagle highlighted a 5-under back nine for Aberg, who birdied the par-4 10th, the par-5 12th and the par-3 14th. Aberg, playing the PGA Tour event on a sponsor exemption, was in a large group at 2-under that included past Masters champion Danny Willett and Tony Finau.

Jon Rahm shot 7-under 65 for a two-shot lead.

Softball

Kailey Wyckoff drove in three runs with a pair of doubles and Ellie Bailey and Alanna Barraza had two RBI apiece as Texas Tech run-ruled North Dakota 13-5 in five innings Thursday, the first day of the Jeannine McHaney Memorial Classic at Rocky Johnson Field.

Bailey finished 3 for 3 with two runs scored for Tech (13-5). Wyckoff, Dee McClarity, Arriana Villa and Barraza had two hits apiece.

On Friday, Tech hosts Rutgers (12-3) at 3 p.m. and Seton Hall (4-5) at 5:30 p.m. The tournament is Tech's home opener after the Red Raiders started the season with 17 games away from home.

Men's tennis

Texas Tech said Thursday a home match against SMU originally scheduled for Friday at the McLeod Tennis Center has been canceled. Tech cited scheduling conflicts with the Mustangs.

Tech (6-6) isn't scheduled to play again until March 10-12 at the Arizona State spring break tournament.

Women's tennis

Texas Tech, which made the championship match of the eight-team Blue-Gray Classic last weekend, is on the road for two matches this weekend in the Metroplex.

Tech (8-4) plays at Texas-Arlington (6-1) at 1 p.m. Friday and at SMU (6-4) at 11 a.m. Sunday.

Last weekend in Montgomery, Alabama, Tech shut out Yale and Arizona by identical 4-0 scores and lost in the Blue-Gray Classic final match to Wake Forest 4-2.
