Texas Tech roundup: Bre'Amber Scott named first-team all-Big 12

Texas Tech's Bre'Amber Scott earned a spot on the all-Big 12 Conference women's basketball first team announced Monday. The selections were voted upon by the league's coaches.

The 5-foot-11 senior guard is third in the conference in scoring at 16.7 points per game. Scott also leads the Lady Raiders with 6.1 rebounds per game.

Scott has played in 28 games after an injury-plagued debut season. She transferred to Tech from Arkansas-Little Rock prior to the 2021-22 campaign, when she appeared in eight games.

Bryn Gerlich was all-conference honorable mention. The 6-0 senior guard is third on the team in scoring (9.1 ppg) and 11th in the Big 12 with 3.1 assists per game.

Former Gruver star Bailey Maupin was one of six players selected to the Big 12 all-freshman team. She averages 9.7 points while shooting 41.9%, including 38% from 3-point range. Her 83% free-throw shooting is sixth-best in the conference.

Tech opens the Big 12 tournament Thursday with a 5 p.m. matchup against Kansas State. The Lady Raiders swept the season series with the Wildcats, winning 85-65 on the road and 78-68 at United Supermarkets Arena.

ORLANDO, Fla. — Texas Tech golfer Ludvig Aberg finished tied for 24th in the Arnold Palmer Invitational, shooting 1-over-par 73 for the second day in a row in Sunday's final round.

Aberg comfortably made it to the weekend at Bay Hill by shooting 2-under 70 in the first two rounds Thursday and Friday. In the group with Aberg who finished 2-under were 2012 U.S. Open champion Webb Simpson and 2022 Kory Ferry Tour champion Justin Suh.

The tournament was one of three pro events Aberg is playing in the early part of 2023. In late January, he made the cut and finished 3-under at the Dubai Desert Classic. He's also scheduled to play in the Valspar Championship March 13-19 in Palm Harbor, Florida.

Men's golf

CABO SAN LUCAS, Baja California Sur — Texas Tech freshman Matthew Comegys birdied his last hole on Monday to shoot 3-under-par 68, putting him in third place after the second round of the Cabo Collegiate Invitational.

Comegys started his round on hole No. 6 and ended a run of seven consecutive pars with an eagle at No. 13 and a birdie at No. 16, both par-5s. He took bogey at the par-4 18th, but closed with a birdie on the par-4 No. 5. He's 4-under for the tournament, two shots behind Wells Williams (65) and Matthew Riedel (68), teammates from top-ranked Vanderbilt.

The Commodores are 15-under-par with a 13-stroke lead going into Tuesday's final round at Twin Dolphin Golf Club. Mississippi stands 2-under, No. 2 Tech 1-under and No. 3 Arizona State even par.

Tech senior Jack Wall and Comegys both shot 1-under 70 in Sunday's first round. Wall carded a 1-over 72 on Monday. Wall and teammate Tyran Snyders (77-66) are in the top 20. Rounding out the Tech lineup are Calum Scott (72-76) and Baard Skogen (76-73).

Tech players tee off in the final round at 10 a.m. CST Tuesday.
