Tee times approach Here are Section V's golfers competing for a state title.

Owen Corby's state-qualifying performance was fueled by a recent disappointing finish.

A school record-holder at Pittsford Sutherland, Corby began the postseason winning the Monroe County Tournament of Champions, but the junior was one stroke away from repeating as the Section V Class A champion.

Two days later, Corby responded at Super Sectionals. His 147 tied the tournament's low score, sharing co-medalist honors with Victor sophomore Carson French.

Corby and French's sharing of the Super Sectionals title automatically qualified them into this weekend's New York State Public High School Athletic Association Boys Golf Championships.

Pittsford Sutherland's Owen Corby and Victor's Carson French were co-medalists of the Super Sectionals championship tournament. Both golfers shot a 147 to automatically qualify for the state tournament.

"Part of reason why he got himself together is because he lost something he had already had," Sutherland coach Dylan Bronson said.

State qualifiers

This will be the first state tournament for each of Section V's nine golfers.

Long are the days of Section V successes behind Gavin Hall and Dominic Bozzelli, but area coaches think this class can be the beginning of a resurgence.

"This can be the group to kickstart our return to state championship golf. I think this group will do well," Bronson said.

Corby plays well under pressure.

After Corby edged his Mendon rival for the Monroe County title, Carpentier prevented Corby from repeating as Class A champ, draining a 20-foot birdie to win the title by one stroke on May 21.

Corby, who just missed a birdie putt to potentially share the A crown, rebounded two days later to win the Super Sectionals tournament on May 23. He shot bogeys on three of his first five holes, and again on 11 and 12, before finished strong with birdies on 15 and 17.

Corby had an eagle opportunity on 15 despite his first shot sailing into the trees. His second shot made in onto the green, but he two-putted from there for birdie.

"To come back, play and recover twice really shows his determination to make sure he's the one that comes out on top," Bronson said. "He was upset he couldn't finish (the Class A final) as co-champion."

Corby's strength is driving and he's golfed with a new driver in recent weeks. Bronson admires Corby's swing, especially his ability to fix his mechanics when they go awry, evident when Corby tied Sutherland's nine-hole school record with a 31 in the section quarterfinals. He'd go on to help the Knights capture their first sectional team title since 2014.

An avid golfer and Monroe Golf Club member, Corby won the Rochester District Golf Association Boys Sub Junior title in 2020. He followed up as the runner-up in the 2021 RDGA Boys Junior Championship.

Blue Devils have a shot

Victor's roster is stacked, evident in its perfect 23-0 season.

French was the 2021 Class AA champion and Burgess won this year's AA title. Senior Berl is the reigning AGR Golfer of the Year and was the medalist of the Class AA championship. Bronson wouldn't be surprised if either Victor golfer placed well at states.

"Victor's kids golfed well all year," Bronson said.

New state course

The NYSPHSAA championships has a new home.

The boys golf state tournament will be hosted by Elmira's Mark Twain Golf Course. The tournament had been hosted in Cornell for decades.

Corby golfed at Mark Twain once before, but many Section V golfers will be introduced this weekend. Section IV participants may have an advantage.

"The challenge for everyone will be learning the golf course in one day," Bronson said. "It's going to take a lot of note taking and visuals for the kids to get used to it."

Practice rounds are set for Saturday. The first round begins at 9 a.m. Sunday. The final round is scheduled to tee off at 7:30 a.m. Monday
