Teekay Tankers Ltd. (NYSE:TNK) Analysts Are More Bearish Than They Used To Be

·3 min read

Market forces rained on the parade of Teekay Tankers Ltd. (NYSE:TNK) shareholders today, when the analysts downgraded their forecasts for this year. Revenue and earnings per share (EPS) forecasts were both revised downwards, with the analysts seeing grey clouds on the horizon.

Following the latest downgrade, the five analysts covering Teekay Tankers provided consensus estimates of US$291m revenue in 2021, which would reflect a sizeable 58% decline on its sales over the past 12 months. Losses are supposed to balloon 62% to US$1.96 per share. Yet before this consensus update, the analysts had been forecasting revenues of US$337m and losses of US$1.60 per share in 2021. So there's been quite a change-up of views after the recent consensus updates, with the analysts making a serious cut to their revenue forecasts while also expecting losses per share to increase.

The consensus price target was broadly unchanged at US$17.71, perhaps implicitly signalling that the weaker earnings outlook is not expected to have a long-term impact on the valuation. That's not the only conclusion we can draw from this data however, as some investors also like to consider the spread in estimates when evaluating analyst price targets. Currently, the most bullish analyst values Teekay Tankers at US$22.00 per share, while the most bearish prices it at US$14.00. There are definitely some different views on the stock, but the range of estimates is not wide enough as to imply that the situation is unforecastable, in our view.

Taking a look at the bigger picture now, one of the ways we can understand these forecasts is to see how they compare to both past performance and industry growth estimates. These estimates imply that sales are expected to slow, with a forecast annualised revenue decline of 68% by the end of 2021. This indicates a significant reduction from annual growth of 15% over the last five years. By contrast, our data suggests that other companies (with analyst coverage) in the same industry are forecast to see their revenue grow 3.7% annually for the foreseeable future. So although its revenues are forecast to shrink, this cloud does not come with a silver lining - Teekay Tankers is expected to lag the wider industry.

The Bottom Line

The most important thing to note from this downgrade is that the consensus increased its forecast losses this year, suggesting all may not be well at Teekay Tankers. Regrettably, they also downgraded their revenue estimates, and the latest forecasts imply the business will grow sales slower than the wider market. The lack of change in the price target is puzzling in light of the downgrade but, with a serious decline expected this year, we wouldn't be surprised if investors were a bit wary of Teekay Tankers.

Still, the long-term prospects of the business are much more relevant than next year's earnings. We have estimates - from multiple Teekay Tankers analysts - going out to 2023, and you can see them free on our platform here.
