Teen accused of shooting Akron gas station employee, stealing tip jar arrested

AKRON, Ohio (WJW) — A 17-year-old suspect accused of shooting an Akron gas station employee and stealing a tip jar in late January has been apprehended, the city of Akron announced Tuesday.

Police were first called to the Gas & Save on the 800 block of West Exchange Street on Jan. 25 after the gas station employee chased the accused tip jar thief down Delia Avenue and was subsequently shot.

Following the shooting, the suspect fled the scene. Thanks to tips from the public, the suspect was arrested Tuesday morning by Akron police and the U.S. Marshals Violent Fugitive Task Force.

“I want to make it very clear that anyone perpetrating violence will be held accountable in Akron,” mayor Shammas Malik said in a statement. “I am thankful that the victim has survived this senseless act, and we will ensure his attacker is brought to justice.”

The teen boy suspect is currently at Summit County Juvenile Detention Facility, the city said, and is charged with the following: Aggravated robbery, felonious assault and tampering with evidence.

The victim is reportedly still recovering in the hospital and is going to “face life-long complications due to this shooting,” the city said in a statement.

An investigation is ongoing.
