Teen arrested in accident that killed Wichita father and injured children, trooper says

An 18-year-old Bel Aire man who was involved in an accident that killed a Wichita father and injured three others has been arrested on suspicion of driving under the influence of alcohol and possession of marijuana, officials said.

Caleb T. Faron was booked into Sedgwick County Jail at 10:46 p.m. Thursday and was released on his own recognizance bond at 12:20 a.m. Friday.

The accident on I-135 north between 13th and 21st happened just before 8 p.m. Thursday.

Uriel Orosco, 31, died at the scene. Three family members in the car with him were injured. A 28-year-old woman had suspected minor injuries, a Kansas Highway Patrol trooper wrote in an online crash report.

The online report didn’t originally list that two children were in the car as well. A 3-year-old and 6-year-old were also taken to the hospital, with critical but stable and minor injuries, according to trooper Chad Crittenden.

Crittenden said Orosco is the father of the children. He thinks the woman is his wife. He said they are family.

Orosco, who was driving a 2011 Hyundai Sonata, was slowing down and had hazard lights as he moved to the outside lane, troopers said. Crittenden said the car broke down, but he didn’t know what caused the breakdown.

Faron, who was driving a 2013 Dodge Journey, was changing lanes, “failed to see (Orosco) slowing down” and rear-ended the car, the trooper wrote in the crash log.

The Journey overturned and came to rest in the lane the driver had started in, the trooper wrote. The Sonata “rotated counterclockwise & came to rest ... against the ... bridge wall.”
