Teen charged in 2022 collision that killed two teenagers in Freehold

Police news

FREEHOLD – A Howell teenager has been charged in connection with a motor-vehicle collision that killed two teens and injured two others in Freehold Township last year, Monmouth County Prosecutor Raymond S. Santiago said Wednesday.

The defendant - who was 17 at the time of the crash - was not identified due to his age, according to the news release. He was charged on juvenile complaints with two counts of second-degree vehicular homicide and two counts of assault by auto.

Just after 10:30 p.m. on Aug. 19, 2022, police were dispatched to the area of 3469 U.S. Highway 9 for a single-vehicle crash, Santiago said. At the scene, officers found the juvenile defendant and four teenage victims who had been passengers in his vehicle.

A 15-year-old boy from Allentown and a 17-year-old boy from Manalapan were pronounced dead at the scene, police said at the time of the crash. Another passenger, a 17-year-old Allentown male, was hospitalized after the crash, police said.

A 15-year-old girl from Manalapan, as well as the driver, were treated for minor injuries and released from a local hospital.

An investigation found that the teenage defendant was driving at a high speed and swerving in and out of lanes when he lost control of his car, according to Santiago. The car ran off the road and struck multiple objects before rolling through a parking lot, eventually striking a steel support pole from a business sign.

Santiago is urging anyone with information about this incident to contact Monmouth County Prosecutor’s Office Detective Brian Boryszewski at 800-533-7443 or Freehold Township Police Officer Sean Foley at 732-462-7500.
