Teen charged in deadly February shooting; suspected in numerous other crimes

A Rochester teenager has been charged in connection with the fatal shooting of a 35-year-old man in northeast Rochester in February, according to Rochester police.

Kyelon Marbury,17, was charged with second-degree murder, first-degree reckless endangerment and second-degree criminal possession of a weapon, all felonies, and is suspected to be involved in numerous other shootings, assault and car thefts in the Rochester region in the past 18 months, said Capt. Frank Umbrino of the Rochester Police Department.

Umbrino, who leads RPD's Major Crimes Unit, said that Marbury, was apprehended at a hotel in Henrietta on Friday without incident. He is accused of fatally shooting Jermaine Wilkins of Buffalo on Feb. 18, 2023. He is also accused of shooting at a man walking on Scio Street, near School No. 25, about seven hours before Wilkins was killed. No one was injured during the incident.

Wilkins was walking in Rochester's Beechwood neighborhood - at Denver and Melville streets - when he was shot three times in the upper body with a rifle. Wilkins ran to a house on the 300 block of Parsells Avenue where around 9:20 p.m. he banged on a door yelling that he was shot.

Arriving officers found Wilkins, who was unresponsive and died at the scene.

Police said that Wilkins is originally from Rochester and was in Monroe County visiting family when he was killed. There was no known relationship between Wilkins and Marbury. Marbury was known to police, though Umbrino could not share further details.

Umbrino said investigators are seeking to speak with anyone who interacted with Marbury.

The teen was arraigned Saturday morning by Monroe County Court Judge Meredith Vacca and was remanded to the Monroe Country Children's Detention Center in Rush without bail, Umbrino said. Additional charges are pending as the case is to be presented to a Monroe County grand jury.

Police are asking anyone who has information about Marbury or any of the incidents is asked to call 911 or RPD's Major Crimes Unit at (585) 428-7157 or CrimeStoppers at (585) 423-9300.
