Teen’s dream of being nurse ends in tragedy days before graduation, Georgia family says

Family members say Montanna Carroll, 18, had a smile that could “light up a room.”

She would “entertain a crowd with her sense of humor, and literally make friends with anyone she met, young or old,” they said of the Georgia teen, who had dreams of becoming a nurse like her brother.

But those dreams were cut short.

Days shy of her graduation, the Cairo High School senior was one of two people killed Monday, May 22, in a crash on State Route 112 in Mitchell County, Georgia, state troopers said.

The two-car wreck was reported just before 8:15 p.m. and left three others injured, according to a preliminary report.

Investigators said a Nissan was headed south on State Route 112 when it hydroplaned, causing the driver to lose control. The car spun counterclockwise and slid into the opposite lane, striking a 2003 Kia driven by Carroll, the report said.

The front end of her Kia hit the Nissan on the rear passenger side before it veered into a ditch, troopers said.

Carroll and the driver of the Nissan, 25-year-old Max Battensby, died at the scene.

“Her short, but fun-filled life will be remembered by all,” her obituary reads.

News of the death sparked an outpouring of tributes for the Georgia teen, who was scheduled to graduate Friday, May 26.

“We are deeply saddened by the loss of Cairo High School graduating senior Montanna Carroll,” Grady County Schools Superintendent Eric McFee said in a statement, adding that Montanna’s mother is a school district employee.

“Our thoughts and prayers are with Montanna and her family,” McFee said.

It marks the second student death at Cairo High School this year, according to the school district.

Troopers said the crash remains under investigation.

Cairo is near the Georgia-Florida line, about 30 miles northeast of Tallahassee, Florida.
