Teen 'Jeopardy!' champ donates $10,000 to cancer research in Alex Trebek's honor

Avi Gupta took home $100,000 over the summer in a teen "Jeopardy!" tournament, and now, he's donating a portion to cancer research in honor of host Alex Trebek.

As part of Pancreatic Cancer Awareness Month, Gupta donated more than $10,000 for pancreatic cancer studies at the Knight Cancer Institute in Oregon.

Trebek, who announced his stage 4 pancreatic cancer diagnosis in March, made a PSA calling for support surrounding Pancreatic Cancer Awareness Month last week.

"I wish I had known sooner that the persistent stomach pain I experienced prior to my diagnosis was a symptom of pancreatic cancer," Trebek said in the PSA.

In a video posted on Twitter, the 18-year-old said he was inspired to give by the "Jeopardy!" host and said he is someone he's looked up to his whole life.

"Working with Alex on Jeopardy! was an honor, and I hope the #Jeopardy community will join me in honoring him," Gupta said on Twitter.

To sweeten the donation even more, Dr. Brian Druker, director of the institute, and his wife matched Gupta's donation, WBNS reported.

"What a remarkable young man and what a great gesture," Druker told WBNS. "We hope it inspires lots and lots more people."
