Police are investigating the death of a Salisbury teen suspected in the armed robbery of a Concord man.

Police found 17-year-old Xavier Nehemiah Zion Charlton shot near the back of a house at 285 Cabarrus Ave. West — about a mile from downtown’s Market Street.

Nicholas Asbury, 24, who lives at the house on Cabarrus Avenue, told police he fired at two people after they confronted him with guns.

Concord Police later identified the two people as Charlton and Kareem Mayo, 22.

2. Cam Newton filmed a video declaring which NFL QBs he’d back up. It’s woefully misguided.

Cam Newton posted a video in early April 2023 in which he said he would be willing to be an NFL backup quarterback, but only for certain quarterbacks in the league. Newton, who had two stints with the Carolina Panthers and was the NFL’s Most Valuable Player in 2015, was out of the league in 2022 after he couldn’t find a job as a starting NFL quarterback.

Cam Newton, the former Carolina Panther QB, read off a list of 12 NFL quarterbacks he’d be willing to back up but left off some big names in the video.

On Newton’s list were a dozen quarterbacks he said he wouldn’t mind backing up. They were Deshaun Watson, Lamar Jackson, Justin Fields, Jalen Hurts and others.

Not on Newton’s list: Joe Burrow, Trevor Lawrence, Justin Herbert, Dak Prescott and a number of other high-profile quarterbacks.

Scott Fowler has more on Cam Newton’s video.

Sandwich Max’s South End location — a fixture in the area since 1993 — is closing up shop Wednesday, April 12, after its building was sold. Now, a different spin on the concept is in the works.

Plans call for Chicago-based Sterling Bay to break ground on a high-rise luxury apartment tower at the site this year.

Owner Sam Nicholson said that he’s partnering with ghost kitchen South End Eats on a takeout and delivery concept that will keep the Sandwich Max brand alive.

Heidi Finley has the details.
