Teen killed in shooting at Del City-Choctaw football game identified

Authorities have identified the teenager who died after a shooting Friday night at a local high school football game.

Cordea Carter, 16, was shot and killed during the Del City-Choctaw game at Bill Jensen Field.  The victim has also been identified as Cordae Carter and Corday Carter by various law enforcement officials and family members.

"Our department didn't want to release his name until we were able to talk to the family, which didn't happen until late (Monday)," Choctaw Police Chief Kelly Marshall said Tuesday afternoon.

Authorities continue to investigate the shooting that killed Carter and left several others injured, but currently no arrest has been made in the case.

Multiple agencies are involved in the investigation, including the Oklahoma County Sheriff's Office and Del City police, but the Choctaw Police Department is the lead agency, Marshall said.

“We’re continuing to investigate, and we’re continuing to interview people, but there are no new updates,” Marshall told The Oklahoman.

The Oklahoman attempted multiple times to reach out to family members of Carter, but no one responded to requests for comment.

Authorities said Carter was a Midwest City High School student. Several other victims were transported to local hospitals and treated for their injuries.

What led to the shooting?

Police believe an argument between at least two males led to the shooting. Investigators also recovered two guns and eight rounds at the scene.

Marshall said shots were fired by an unknown number of individuals at the game. An off-duty Del City police officer working security fired at least one shot that struck a 42-year-old man in the chest after the officer "perceived some sort of threat," said Oklahoma County Sheriff Tommie Johnson III.

The 42-year-old man was last reported as in critical condition, according to the Oklahoma County Sheriff's Office. The off-duty Del City police officer has been placed on paid leave.

Players and fans at the game between Del City and Choctaw scrambled for cover when multiple gunshots were fired during the third quarter.

Choctaw-Nicoma Park Schools football games will be postponed

Superintendent David Reid of Choctaw-Nicoma Park Schools announced in a statement that this week’s football games will be postponed.

“On any given week, the football team, band, color guard, AFJROTC, cheer, pom, middle and elementary school athletes, etc. participate,” Reid said. “Students from each of these groups were greatly affected by Friday night’s events. For this reason, we will be postponing all football games for the week of August 28th – September 2nd. This will allow coaches, directors, sponsors, etc. additional time to attend to the social and psychological needs created by this tragic event.”

School officials said access to grief counselors will continue to be provided to students.

“This tragedy was traumatizing to people from many of our schools,” Mid-Del Schools Superintendent Rick Cobb said in a statement. "Midwest City High School students lost a classmate. Children throughout the Del City feeder pattern who were in attendance at the game experienced something that none of us should ever have to see or hear."

Cobb added: “I’m proud of how our students and staff handled themselves during the chaos. That said, recovering from grief and trauma is a process. It takes time and support. We will make every effort to provide that support to our students and staff.”
