Teen who had no idea she was pregnant wakes up from coma to learn she's given birth
A teenager woke from a four-day coma to find that she had given birth to a baby despite not knowing that she was pregnant.
Ebony Stevenson, 18, went to bed on Dec. 2 after suffering a headache.
The college student was then rushed to hospital and placed in an induced coma before waking up four days later having given birth to a baby girl.
Stevenson was unaware she was pregnant. She hadn’t developed a larger stomach, missed a period or suffered from morning sickness.
She later discovered that she has a rare condition known as uterus didelphys — which affects one in 3,000 women — which means her unborn baby was hidden in one of two uteruses.
While one uterus continued to menstruate, the other carried her child.
When Stevenson was rushed to the hospital after suffering a number of seizures, medics discovered that she was suffering from preeclampsia, which affects expectant mothers.
The medical team immediately contacted the teenager’s mother and explained that the baby needed to be delivered as soon as possible.
The teen underwent an emergency C-section and gave birth to her first daughter, whom she later named Elodie.
“Waking up from a coma to be told I had been pregnant and had given birth to a baby girl was overwhelming to say the least,” the 18-year-old admitted. “Meeting my baby was so surreal. It felt like an out-of-body experience.
“I worried I wouldn’t bond with my daughter because I had no time to get my head around her arrival, but I think she’s amazing.”
Stevenson’s mother, Sheree, was the first to hold her surprise grandchild.
“It was a strange moment because I had no time to prepare for it,” she said. “I was over the moon that she was happy and healthy, but couldn’t help but worry about my own little girl, who remained in a coma.”
Elodie was born weighing 7 pounds 10 ounces. Doctors believe she was carried to full term without her mother realizing it due to one of Stevenson’s uteruses being closer to her back.
“Although I had no time to prepare, I wouldn’t change what’s happened for the world,” Stevenson added. “I’m so excited to wake up and see her every morning, and to get to spend another day with my precious little miracle.”
