CANTON TWP. ‒ A teen who bolted from the Multi-County Juvenile Attention System Sunday night is back in custody.

Stark County Sheriff's deputies said they arrested the 17-year-old without incident around 8 a.m. Monday. He faces new charges of felony escape, violation of prior court order and misdemeanor assault. He was returned to juvenile detention, authorities said.

The teen walked out of the facility around 7:30 p.m. Sunday at 815 Faircrest Street SW. The sheriff's office was called in to help locate him.

MCJAS Superintendent James McKenzie said the incident remains under investigation but said it wouldn't happen again.

While understaffed, he said, the escape was not caused by lack of personnel.

"Everyone uses it as an excuse in this line of work," McKenzie said. "I've always lived by the motto: You work with what you got. If you have to change operations (because of lack of staff) then you change."

He said the teen was housed in the community corrections facility in a building that also houses the detention center on the upstairs floor.

While trying to leave the property, the teen assaulted staff members, McKenzie said.

Multi-County Juvenile Attention is a regional juvenile justice campus that oversees several operations: A group home, a residential treatment center, and the community corrections facility for juvenile crime offenders.

According to officials, the investigation continues. Anyone with information is asked to call the Sheriff's office at 330-430-3800.
