Teen skateboarder suffers brain injury after collision with SUV in Canton

CANTON ‒ A 17-year-old suffered a traumatic brain injury when the motorized skateboard he was riding collided with a motor vehicle at 25th Street and Harvard Avenue NW, Canton police said.

Samuel P. Cruz III was in stable but critical condition Wednesday afternoon when he was taken to Cleveland Clinic Mercy Hospital immediately after the collision, said Canton police spokesman Lt. Dennis Garren.

He was transferred to Akron Children's Hospital, where he had brain surgery, said his aunt, Amber Lash.

No citation had been issued as of Friday morning to the teen or to the driver of the gray 2005 Honda Pilot, Bonnie L. Clark, 43, of Canton.

The Canton Metro Crash Team responded and is investigating, Garren said.

The injured teen was not wearing a helmet or other safety equipment, according to the police crash report. He lives about half a mile away from the crash site.

The police crash report indicates the skateboarder was going east on 25th Street when he collided with the Pilot, which was southbound on Harvard. The crash was reported at 4:57 p.m.

Police are asking any witnesses to the accident to call them at 330-438-4485.
