Teen Vogue Appoints NowThis Managing Editor Versha Sharma as New Editor-in-Chief

Versha Sharma, an outgoing managing editor for NowThis, is now the new editor-in-chief of Teen Vogue, the publication announced on Monday.

The new editor-in-chief: Anna Wintour, the global editorial director of Vogue and the chief content officer of Condé Nast, described Sharma, 34, as a natural leader “with a global perspective and deep understanding of local trends and issues,” the New York Times reported.

  • Sharma will replace Alexi McCammond, who stepped down from the position in March after receiving backlash over past tweets from 2011 that appear anti-Asian.

  • The new Teen Vogue editor-in-chief refused to comment on the matter when asked during an interview. Sharma said she shares the values “of the Teen Vogue staff and audience," adding she is excited to work with them.

  • She hopes “Teen Vogue can continue to be a force for good, with a focus on empathy, accountability, optimism and impact,” Sharma added, USA Today reported.

  • "I am incredibly excited and grateful for this awesome opportunity. Thank you to everyone who helped get me here!" she shared in a Twitter post.

  • Sharma will begin her position as editor-in-chief on May 24, according to a press release.


Past work: As managing editor since 2015, Sharma was in charge of news and cultural coverage at NowThis.

  • Sharma, a Brooklyn resident born in Louisiana, was also part of a team that worked on a documentary detailing the aftermath of Hurricane Maria in Puerto Rico. The team received the Edward R. Murrow Award in 2018 for the project.

  • Sharma is the daughter of Indian immigrants and lives in New York, according to Spectrum News.

  • She is also a board member of the Online News Association.

  • Sharma previously worked for TalkingPointsMemo, MSNBC.com and Vocativ.
