Girl critical after shooting outside Arlington rec center; 2 teens arrested, police say

A teenage girl was critically injured in a shooting outside an Arlington recreation center Wednesday morning and two juveniles have been arrested, police said.

Officers responded to the Dottie Lynn Recreation Center in the 3200 block of Norwood Lane around 4:20 a.m. regarding a shooting. They found a teenage girl in the pool area who had been shot, according to police. The victim was transported to a local hospital in critical condition.

Tim Ciesco, a spokesperson from the Arlington Police Department, said Wednesday afternoon that the teen was out of surgery and expected to survive. Investigators haven’t been able to talk with her yet due to her condition.

Ciesco said the investigation is ongoing.

“We believe the victim and a group of teens jumped the fence around the pool area — which is closed for the season — and at some point while they were gathered there, the victim was shot,” Ciesco said. “It remains unclear what led to the shooting and who fired the shot.”

Officers arrested two teens who were believed to be in the area when the shooting occurred. They also recovered a gun, and investigators are trying to confirm if that was the weapon used in the shooting, Ciesco said.

A teenage girl was arrested on suspicion of unlawful carrying of a weapon, evading arrest and criminal trespass. A teenage boy was arrested on suspicion of criminal trespass. Both teens were taken to the Tarrant County Juvenile Center, but authorities won’t release their names due to their age, Ciesco said.

Police said they believe several other teens were at the recreation center when the shooting occurred. Anyone with information about those individuals or the shooting is asked to contact Detective Wheetley at 817-459-5678.
