Update: Police locate vehicle allegedly involved in hit-and-run that killed Des Moines teenager

Update, 11:10 a.m. Friday: Sgt. Paul Parizek, a Des Moines police spokesperson, identified the victim as 14-year-old Ema Cardenas.

Update, 9 a.m. Friday:

Sgt. Paul Parizek, a Des Moines police spokesperson, said in a news release Friday morning that the vehicle allegedly involved in Thursday's fatal hit-and-run has been located and impounded.

Parizek said the vehicle was located at a home less than a mile from where the crash happened, but declined to say if anyone has been charged in the incident.

A teenage girl died Thursday following a hit-and-run incident in the 1600 block of E. University Avenue in Des Moines.

At approximately 3:42 p.m. Thursday, Des Moines Police Department patrol officers and Des Moines Fire Department rescue personnel responded to a report of a pedestrian injured in a hit-and-run crash.

First responders arrived to find the girl with critical injuries. She was transported to a local hospital by Des Moines Fire Department medics.

Witnesses reported that the vehicle involved was a tan-colored SUV. The vehicle should have front-end damage, police said.

The Des Moines Police Department Traffic Unit is investigating. Anyone with information regarding the vehicle involved or the driver is asked to call the Des Moines Police Department Traffic Unit at 515-323-8370. Anonymous tips may also be submitted.
