Teenager detained after gun found at Riley High School
SOUTH BEND — Police arrested a juvenile at Riley High School on Friday after the teenager allegedly brought a gun into the school building.
In a release from the South Bend Police Department, officials said they received a tip around 9 a.m. that someone had brought a gun to Riley. The school's student resource officer and Riley security staff "collaborated to quickly recover the weapon," the release said, and located the person they believe responsible for the incident.
The juvenile was detained and was taken to the Juvenile Justice Center, police said.
Friday's incident marks the fourth time since the start of the school year in August that a South Bend student has been detained for having a weapon on or near school property.
In August, a South Bend high schooler was arrested for firing shots near a group of students after being dropped off by a school bus on the first day of classes near Huey and Bulla streets. That teenager was sentenced to a juvenile facility with the Department of Corrections.
On Sept. 20, a gunshot was reported on a bus taking Jackson Middle School students home from classes. A 13-year-old student was arrested and is accused in juvenile court of criminal recklessness, illegal possession of a firearm and possessing a firearm on a school bus.
Later that same week, staff at Washington High School found a gun in a student's backpack after breaking up a fight between two boys. That 16-year-old is charged in adult court with felony possession of a weapon on school grounds.
