Teenager dies after crashing car while being chased by police

A teenage driver has been killed in a collision following a police pursuit.

The man, 19, suffered fatal injuries after crashing his Nissan Primera in Spennymoor, County Durham on Friday afternoon.

At around 2.30pm, officers started pursuing the unnamed teen’s car before the collision in Central Drive, Middlestone Moor.

Tributes have been left for the teenager at the scene, including a card that read: “Never ever forget you my brother, always my brother, love you so much my homie.’

Another note said: “Rest in paradise bro. You will be engraved in my heart I will miss you so so much and I will never forget you ever.”

A police spokesman confirmed the force had referred itself to the Independent Office for Police Conduct (IOPC).

They have not said why they were pursuing the vehicle.

A Durham Constabulary police spokesperson said: “We understand that shortly after 2.30pm a Durham Constabulary marked police car followed a Nissan Primera.

“After the pursuit the vehicle crashed on Central Drive, Middlestone Moor.

“The 19-year-old man driving the Nissan was fatally injured during the incident.”

David Ford, the IOPC’s interim regional director, added: “Our thoughts and sympathies are with his family and friends and anyone affected by this sad incident.

“We are attending the scene and the post-incident procedures to begin gathering evidence.
